Mayo Clinic Health News Blame The Yips For A Poor Golf Game Are putts of two to four feet bedeviling your golf game? There could be a medical explanation, according to the June· issue of Mayo Clinic Health Letter. A recent Mayo Clinic study found that among 1,031 avid golfers, more than half have difficulty with such putts, even after 20 years without problems. The signs and symptoms of spinal stenosis tend to appear slowly and are most common after age 60. Common symptoms are: . muscles • Pain that radiates from the buttocks to the calf • Aching in the buttocks, thigh and calf (Continued on page 2-B) "DETAILS MAKE A DIFFERENCE" TO PROVIDE The phenomenon is called the yips, and it can cause tremors, jerking and freezing. It's often worse in stressful situations, such as tournaments, and adds an average of five strokes per 18 holes. EXCEPTIONAL DENTISTRY Researchers speculate that the yips are caused by some combination of physical and psychological factors. They plan research on whether changing the grip or putter could help. Beta blockers, used to treat high blood pressure and certain heart conditions, are also being studied as a treatment. STATE-OF-ART DENTAL FACILITIES Pain Doesn't Have To Put An End To Walking If you are avoiding a daily walk because of leg and buttocks pain, you could have spinal stenosis, a narrowing of your spinal canal, according to the June issue of Mayo Clinic Health Letter. Don't Blame Your Toothbrush Generally, the symptoms get worse with VJalking, especially walking downhill, and standing. There are several treatment options. In the past, spinal stenosis was primarily managed through surgical treatment, which enlarges the spinal canal where the nerves are compressed. However, studie~ have shown that the disease is often not relentlessly progressive. Your physician could recommend physical therapy, pain medications or surgery, depending· on the severity of the symptoms. Could your toothbrush be the carrier of germs that cause back-to-back colds or repeated strep throat infections? According to the June issue of Mayo Clinic Health Letter, there's little evidence to support the toothbrush as the cause of illness. Reasons for repeated strep infections or tonsillitis might be related to the anatomy of a person's tonsils, or re-exposure to the infection Russell P. But, if you've just been sick, it can't hurt to replace the toothbrush. Or, if it's relatively n_ew, clean it by running it through the normal dishwasher cycle with your dishes. The American Dental Association recommends that you replace your toothbrush regularly - every three to four months or sooner if the brushes are frayed or worn. Breast Cancer Deaths Decreasing This year, nearly 200,000 American women will be diagnosed with breast cancer, and about one-fifth will die from it. About one in 1 O American women who live to age 80 will develop the disease at some time. Despite the scary statistics, progress is being made in treating breast cancer, according to the Medical Essay, a supplement to the June issue of Mayo Clinic Health Letter. Most promising is that the number of deaths is declining due to early detection and prompt treatment. Here are highlights of recent developments: New treatments: Two drugs, anastrozole (Arimidex) and letrozole (Femara) recently gained Food and Drug Administration approval for use as a first-line treatment for postmenopausal women with advanced breast cancer. Drugs for prevention: Several drugs have been identified that may be effective in preventing cancer: Among them is tamoxifen (Nolvadex). Most types of breast cancer are fueled by the body's estrogen, and tamoxifen_ is a synthetic "anti-estrogen" that reduces the risk of invasive breast cancer. Tamoxifen may post other health risks, and its long-term effectiveness in cancer prevention is still unknown. More studies are underway. Surgery for prevention: A Mayo Clinic study of women with a family history of breast cancer found that having both breasts removed to prevent cancer reduces the risk of developing cancer by at least 90 percent. Surgical treatment options: The Na~i~nal Cancer Institute is sponsoring two large clinical · trials to determine whether it's possible to limit the removal of lymph nodes from under the arm of a woman to only one node or just a few. Standard treatment usually involves the removal of more lymph nodes, which can cause (Continued on page 3-B) Add !iome FATTo Your Bottom Line! Wlt:h Fa§t, Accurate, Profitable. For example consumers are becoming increasingly aware 1 of the benefits of adding vitamin E to their daily diet. The main role of vitamin E is to act as an antioxidant, boosting the immune syst_em and protecting cell membranes from toxic compounds, heavy metals, radiation and free radicals. This vitamin is believed to protect against heart disease, improve eye health and assist in the management of some kinds of diabetes. In addition, it has been found to aid in delaying the progression of Alzheimer's disease as well as various forms of cancer. Unfortunately, some of the foods richest in vitamin E-such as peanut butter, various vegetable oils and nuts-are also high in fat content. That's why many experts believe adding a dietary supplement containing vitamin E may bE' an excellent way to obtuln thEi health benefits without the fat. For example, a recent study revealed that 75 percent of cardiologists surveyed r~commended vitamin E supplements to their patients, generally in 400 International Units (IU), which ·,urpu• , • the recommended dlotary ,11· Las Vegas ISRAE~ITE lowance (RDA) of 33 IU for vitamin E. While the best way to get nutrients is through food, to obtain 400 IU of vitamin E you would need to consume nearly 12 pounds of dry roasted peanuts or 133 cups of broccoli every day. In contrast, a single vitamin E supplement can provide this amount.
