SUBJECT: DR IRKING- WATER SYSTEM L e a r S i r : - LAS VEGASy SHOPS* As p er ouf conversation a few days ago I took up w ith our icje machine expert the question o f in c re a sin g the amount o f water to he furn ish ed under system proposed in recent le t t e r to General Manager Nutt and am in re c e ip t o f re p ly from our Mr. Mann. He.atffvises th at by cu ttin g down the amount o f p ip in g from f i f t e e n hundred fe e t to one thousand fe a r he can fu rn ish 300 men one g a llo n o f water cooled from 80° to 50° over a working s h if t o f nine hours. This w ater to be d is t rib u te d through the shop over a system containing not more than one thousand l i n e a l fe e t o f l w pipe or i t * s e q u iv a len t. With condensing water not to exceed 86° our #4 machine has a cap acity o f absorbin g 17,220 B r it is h Thermal U n its p er hour w h ile the t o t a l load e f the machine on above b a s is w i l l equal 16,407 B r it is h Thermal U nits per hour aid during extrem ely warm weather the machine w i l l be req u ired to run almost continuously durin g the day. Mr. Mann has checked h is fig u r e s over very c a r e f u lly as regard s actu al consumption o f water in numerous p la n ts wherein our machines have been in s t a lle d and assu res me th at the a c tu a l average consumption w i l l come very c lo se to our f i r s t estim ate o f 1/2 g a llo n p er man p er day. We have a number o f machines in v a rio u s iro n works, s t e e l fou n d ries e t c ., where la b o rin g conditions w i l l be p r a c t i c a lly the same as those found in Las Vegas shops.
