MIRROR-NEWS 145 S. SPRING ST.- LOS ANGELES 53 - MADISON 5-2311 VIRGIL PINKLEY Editor and Publisher March 28, 1957 Dear Al: I haven't replied to your letter sooner because I wanted to talk with VP about it and have the situation looked into thoroughly. I have found out the following: As VP previously told you, we have a definite policy against free loading on the Mirror-News as it applies, not only to Las Vegas, but to other places as well. We do not believe it is right for three, four, five, six or more of our people to free load over a week end and to fill our columns with material to discharge the free load obligation. It is unfair to readers and advertisers. There never has been any policy to eliminate or withhold the name of the Sands in connection with any legitimate news story or column. On the other hand, the Sands has been our largest, most consistent and best advertiser in Las Vegas. The Sands is not on any "list" banning mention of the organization's name. It was a mistake for our copy desk to eliminate reference in Earl Wilson's column to the Sands, because it was written from New York and it obviously was not a result of "free loading." We are really sorry the mistake occurred. Mr. Pinkley has talked with the managing editor and with the copy desk accordingly. Further, he has instructed the managing editor to inform our various desks that the Sands is a good and esteemed advertiser and should be treated accordingly. Lick Williams and The Rounder column are under instructions to mention the Sands and to write about the Sands in any legitimate manner and length. Fir. Pinkley has asked me to forward the enclosed tear page from the Mirror- News, dealing with travel and resorts. It carries a feature entitled "The Batebook" which lists all of the Vegas shows. VP says the Mirror-News is not against Las Vegas. We are trying, however, to run a good, reliable and legitimate newspaper, devoted to the best interests of our readers and advertisers and we are trying to hold to a minimum free loading, cream puffs, unjustifiable editorial support, etc.. You know how much we think of you and the Sands, Al, so I hope you will understand how sorry we are for the inadvertent error by our copy desk. And be sure you always let us know if there is something we have slipped up on. This is what helps us put out a paper which does a good job for everyone concerned. As ever, v2 *
