Folger Las Vegas Land and Water Co* 401 South Second Street Las Vegas, Nevada Dear Mr. Folger: As you know, this office and your own representatives have recently picked up samples of water from the supply furnishing culinary water to citizens of Las Vegs, which show fecal con­tamination hy standard laboratory methods. Several samples proved either questionable or unsafe in the area served by the Ogden Street Main. At that time (May 10), I called you and the Las Vegas City Engineer to report and discuss same, 'it was my recommendation that the above line or lines involved be flushed and that chlorine be added to the water in the involved area. On May 12, in our conversation it was agreed that the entire system should get chlorine. All of this was carried out accord­ing to your statement and tests at several points for chlorine verified this. Then early last week I suggested that all sources of water be sampled for testing. This was accomplished by your department with all samples being reported as satisfactory except the Big Spring* supply. This sample showed fecal contamination. This should be rechecked immediately and I suggest a wide sampling throughout the system. It is therefore my opinion that the entire water supply should be chlorinated constantly as a safety measure, starting immediately. There are several reasons to support To name a few: such a request. 1. Apparently one source of supply is contaminated. 2. Known recent contamination of the Ogden Street line. 3* Possible City-wide contamination where a source of supply shows contamination. I refer to the Big Spring water sample collected by your department. Then seemingly, from all information I can gain, it has been a fairly common practice to lay or cross water and sewer lines at too close a distance for safety. Such conditions, If they exist, place the water system sub­ject to contamination at all times.
