f « He* Railroad taxes m Nevada Los Angeles, February 8§, 1927. Hr* F. H. Knickerbocker s X have read, and return herewi th under personal cover copy of hr* bracken1s letter of February 13th addressed to Mr. Calvin on the above subject. Some weeks ago Mr* Bracken advised me that an increase In taxation had been suggested by Dr, Martin. who la ^resident of the C h a f e r of Com&ercs at Las Yeg&s, but aside from this information X have hoard nothing from anyone regarding the matter* While Mr* Bracken and myself were in Carson City during the latter part of January, we took occasion to call on Mr* Sh&ughnessy, Chairman of the fax Commission, and while we did not ©all his attention to any eoaatesipXated. or proposed change in valuations, we felt him out as best we could and got no Intimations from that source of any contemplated raise in Itoion Pacific Railroad*s valuations* The truth of the matter is that the County of Clark and the City of has Vegas have been so lavish* lug. In their expenditures for schools, highways and local Improvements feat they are about up fe the rate limit allowed by law, and the only way feat they can see out Is to Increase th© valuation* This would effect fee holdings of the Las Vegas Land and later Company, but to no greater extent than it would fee ether: land owners in the vicinity. Leo was here a couple of times recently and be made no mention of any tax increase agitation, and X am writing him today to get in touch wife Walter and see if there is anything to be done in fee matter, and X will keep you posted* FRStX c c - Mr. A, S .
