R. APR ' 6 1954 AES AJS PJL WCP FBL ADH DFW - On Line April 5th, S:45 AM, at Las Vegas, Nev., water tower under construction east of roundhouse collapsed resulting in one fatality and two injuries. Tower being constructed by The Darby Company of Kansas City, Missouri, contractors, under contract CD 39716-1, Audit &L006. Contractor's Supt. of construction on ground at time of accident C. F. Sheckells, 1724 Wood Ave. Injured employes of Darby Company were H. Gentle, Helper, 14^07 Cook St., Compton, Calif., fatally injured. Body removed by Mercy Ambulance. Foreman C. J. Rusher, 1467 Agness St., Kansas City, Mo., and Helper Earl Dungey, 26027 Narbonne Ave., Lomita, Calif., sustained severe injuries and taken to Las Vegas Hospital by ambulance. Developed Helper Earl Dungey operating hand winch moving suspended boom 40 ft. long and 30 inches in diameter into position when handle on winch slipped off allowing boom to drop into center of column supports causing entire structure to collapse toward center. No Union Pacific employes involved. Divn Engr and B&B Supvr enroute Los Angeles to Las Vegas by auto. S-l VWS
