PRESS DATE SAT, MAX 50# 1953 TOTAL SYNDICATED GROUP ?╟≤ DAILY AP WIRE TRANSMISSION ?╟≤ NATIONALLY SYNDICATED TV-RAWOLOGIC He's the Ladies' Choice For New Television Show HOLLYWOOD ?╟÷ I've met the great ?╟÷ the near great, and then those coming up the ladder whoj will eventually replace the great! I've got one amiable young Irish- m a n, Johnny Dugan, in mind who now, as emcee of the hew summer NBC-TV show, "L a d i e s' Choice," is on__?╟?. ?╟?. the way up that tome.danson ladder to take his spot among the great. Sounds like I'm going a bit''overboard about the guy, but his sincerity and sSnbition is helping to push hin>jj*ipward. Why do I make this prediction? Well, for one thing, as I said before, Johnn^ is sincere and ambitious. He's a clean-cut, rugged appearing "young fellow with a warmthfeShat is appealing to any audience. Then, I have yet to ever hear him ridicule a person during an interview, or make them the butt of any wisecracks, as so many emcees do. He's gracious, and although in real life is far from humble, he gives that impression to the audience and TViewer?╟÷ a quality so needed in show busi- ness- ^^4l?╜^ '*"% Then, of course, there's his voice ?╟÷ just another of the sets which tends to tie in the prediction of success to the guy. Starting Monday, June 8, you'll see the ladies' choice, Johnny Dugan, in the new program, "Ladies' Choice" every Monday through Friday on his coast-to- coast telecast. "The idea behind the program," Johnny told me, "is to give the nation's ladies a voice in selecting some of the talent which appears on television. The women will select performers, three a. day, who will compete ?╟÷By TOM E. DANSON on the show for prizes galore, in addition to cash and professional engagements." Johnny and Mrs. Dugan and' family still live in the trailer he bought several years ago when he was on the move doing club dates. "Do you know what we have in that trailer?" Johnny asked me. "A mother cat, six kittens, two parakeets, five gallons of tropical fish, a bowl of goldfish and a baby sparrow being brought up by an eye dropper, j Otherwise," he quipped, "there's plenty of room!" * * ?╓¬ RAMBLING AROUND. While sitting in Sam LUtz' office the other day, I heard him talking long distance to Jack Entratter in Las Vegas. Sam was selling the talents of the Kean sisters, Betty and Jane. During the short session, the dollars really flew, and when Sam concluded, he gave a deep sigh, remarking^ "Well, there's $7500 a wj^te^f*ff^8irls when they opjairatrthe Sands j>n Sept. 16!" P. S. to Sam Ujjk'. Can ya please do tft^sasii^for me? . .. . Liberace told me a little about his command performance for President . Eisenhower last week in Washington, D. C. during the Press Photographer's Ball. After his performance, Lee said that Eric Johnson told him that the President remarked, "That boy makes the piano sound like two pianos!" ; . . I Bud Cole, formerly program director for NBC's television station here, KNBH, is engaged to the TV lovely, Norma Gilchrist . . . ABC has ;just signed the Eddie Cantor "find," Sammy Davis Jr., to a long-term contract. He's the comedian-mimic that made such a hit on the Cantor TV presentations for "Comedy Hour."
