As I cast my v o t e with t h e push of one button, I c a r r i e d a prayer in my h e a r t . . . f o r my family, my neighbors, my c l i e n t s , my c o n g r e g a t i o n , and this t i m e , for the first time, for my people. Many of you do not know that I have a day job. Listen to how others, the press i n c l u d e d , s p e a k about Lieberman, the Jew. The now famous story about how he w a l k e d 5 miles in t h e dark a n d cold on S h a b b a t was because he is p r i n c i p l e d . He is righteous. He is caring. He goes to s y n a g o g u e . I can still feel the chilly breeze of sitting in the Sukkah while partaking of a Hebrew School snack. I can also recall the rainy days of Sukkot, watching through the window as the soggy decorations dripped to the ground. But I never learned to appreciate Sukkot until I experienced it in Israel. Walking through the streets of Jerusalem, one cannot avoid noticing the Sukkot on every balcony. In fact, our neighbors on Tchernikovsky Street actually built a Sukkah in between their two balconies, with only a wooden board for support. Not the safest Sukkah I had ever seen! The shuk, a marketplace where lulavim and etrogim are sold, is busy from morning until evening with observant Jews inspecting the palms and the citrons with microscopes to ensure that they purchase the best set available. A fascinating sight indeed! But the most enjoyable aspect of the holiday of Sukkot in Israel was the ability to walk from Sukkah to Sukkah, eating, singing, and celebrating together with friends. Each day of the week we found ourselves eating a meal in a different Sukkah. Even the restaurants built their own Sukkot for outdoor seating! Living in Nevada, we probably won't find too many restaurants with outdoor Sukkot. Although, Kosher Chinese in the Sukkah sounds intriguing! Nonetheless, we do enjoy a luxury that most Jews around the world would certainly envy. We can celebrate the holiday of Sukkot the way in which it was intended to be celebrated. . .outside! During the week of Sukkot, it is a mitzvah to eat and even sleep in the Sukkah, as long as we rejoice and do not suffer by doing so. In fact, our Rabbis insisted that if one is uncomfortable while "living" in the Sukkah, he/she must go inside. Consequently, in many colder or rainier climates, minimal time is actually spent in the Sukkah. I have been told that October is one of the most beautiful months in Southern Nevada, so Sukkot arrives at an ideal time of year for us. What a perfect opportunity to build a Sukkah! Why not enjoy the post-summer weather in your very own Sukkah? Consider inviting family and friends over for a meal in the Sukkah, or have a Sukkah sleep-over for the children. Wouldn't it be great if every year we had enough Sukkot at Midbar Kodesh to "hop" from Sukkah to Sukkah for a progressive meal?! I believe this is a realistic goal--now it's up to you and me to make it happen. If you need guidance or suggestions on how to build a Sukkah, please call us in the office and we'll be happy to point you in the right direction. ~ Rabbi Jeremy Wiederhorn J? islinfl and your family a 'Shanah Tovah 1 i ' Metukah" (jacqui ? ? m a s d a - t e ' ? : ? OCTOBER 2000 D WE ARE COLUMBINE Littleton, Colorado y F T l O M THE CANTOR X c a n ' t really say what m o t i v a t e d me to want to go t h e r e . I d o n ' t think it was for a m a c a b r e curiosity. I j u s t knew that I had to see it, to t o u c h it and to feel it for myself. That I guess is t h e b r o a d c a s t e r in me. A f t e r all, t h e massacre at C o l u m b i n e High School -- like the O k l a h o m a City bombing b e f o r e it, w e r e d e f i n i n g moments in t h e history of t e r r o r i sm in A m e r i c a . And so as I d r o v e t h r o u g h the rolling hills of L i t t l e t o n , C o l o r a d o several weeks ago, I saw a b e a u t i f u l suburban community, with lovely n e i g h b o r h o o d s l o c a t e d only a f ew miles east of the f o o t h i l l s of the Rocky Mountains, t o w a r d s the s o u t h w e s t e r n edge of Denver. T h e r e was an e e r i e f e e l i n g as I drove north on P i e r c e S t r e e t , o b s e r v i ng several s t r i p malls and various housing d e v e l o p m e n t s that all c a r r i e d the name of C o l u m b i n e . And off in the d i s t a n c e , I i m m e d i a t e l y r e c o g n i z e d the a p p r o a c h i n g s t r u c t u r e that was all so f a m i l i a r to me and to millions of A m e r i c a n s . We all had w a t c h e d the images of t r a g e d y on our t e l e v i s i o n sets t h a t April morning, some e i g h t e e n months ago. What I w a s not p r e p a r e d for was the beauty of the campus that I found. C o l u m b i n e High School sits a d j a c e n t to a very large and quite b e a u t i f u l park. I w a t c h e d Columbine High School s t u d e n t s coming out from t h e school a f t e r their first day of c l a s s this f a l l . Each seemed to be c a r r y i ng a b a c k p a c k on t h e i r shoulders. They each got into t h e i r cars and t r u c k s t h a t were p a r k e d t h e r e . And I c o u l d not help but wonder, as I l o o k e d at some of t h e older s t u d e n t s , where each of t h em were on that f a t e f u l day I s t o p p e d at t h e memorial that was d e d i c a t e d one year ago for the t e a c h e r who died in t h e arms of his s t u d e n t s . As I p a i d my r e s p e c t to the memory of t h i s t e a c h e r , I saw the i n s c r i p t i o n c a r v e d in stone: WE ARE COLUMBINE. I am not ashamed to say that I c r i e d t w i c e a f t e r the shootings. The f i r s t t i m e was during the famous i n t e r v i ew on The Today Show, the day after t h e s h o o t i n g . As I w a t c h e d the student who himself was caught in t h e library, and who lost his sister, I c o u l d not help but sob. He also s h a r e d the i n t e r v i ew w i t h the f a t h e r who lost his son, who a p p a r e n t l y was shot b e c a u s e he was Black. The s e c o n d t i m e was at the r e - o p e n i n g of the school in S e p t e m b e r of 1 9 9 9 . It was during t h i s ceremony that we heard the t h o u s a n d s of s t u d e n t s echo their s t u d e n t body president and their school p r i n c i p a l : WE ARE COLUMBINE. I c o n s i d e r myself to be a community leader who p a s s i o n a t e l y f e e l s the r e s p o n s i b i l i t y of being a Jew. I want every Jew to f e e l the same passion. Who else can do what we can do, if we want to do it? Who else can make a d i f f e r e n c e , t h e way t h a t only we can? It is my d e e p e s t hope and prayer that as we a p p r o a c h the b e g i n n i n g of a new year, and the beginning of a new school year, our c o n g r e g a t i o n and our community, can all j o in t o g e t h e r with one voice. Let our voice be loud and clear as we resolve to work to stop the v i o l e n c e in our schools. Let our v o i c e be loud and clear as we resolve to work to keep our c h i l d r e n safe f r om harm.
