TO: Monica Moradkhan CSUN Student Government FROM: Kelly Kehlbeck First-Year Experience and ruServices DATE: March 24, 2003 RE: Sponsorship for the 2003 - 2004 Student Handbook/Planner Plans are underway for the 2003 - 2004 Student Handbook/Planner. The UNLV Handbook/Planner is distributed to roughly 13,000 students each academic year and has received very positive evaluations from students. Please see the attached sheet for the results of a student evaluation completed in February 2003. The handbook/planner gets better each year based on feedback from students. I again plan to make minor changes based on evaluation feedback to continue to improve this publication and provide students with something that is both helpful and useful while they are in school. The past six years, CSUN has financially sponsored the UNLV Student Handbook/Planner by giving $8,000.00 towards this project. Hopefully, CSUN will continue this same sponsorship for this upcoming year. For CSUN's sponsorship, you will receive a full-page in the handbook section, have the CSUN logo on the inside front cover, and have the CSUN logo as a watermark on every other page in the planner section. I look forward to working with CSUN Student Government on the Student Handbook/Planner. If you have any questions, please contact me at x52971. How often do you use your Student Handbook/Planner? Daily = 81% 2 or 3 times per week = 16% Once a week = 3% Once a month = 0% What do you use your Student Handbook/Planner for? (Check all that apply) Calendar/planner = 94% UNLV information = 68% Phone numbers = 65% Campus map = 55% Own personal notes = 77% Other • Class schedules for test, projects, etc. • Football and basketball schedules • Allows me to make plans for the week I have learned about available programs and services by using the Student Handbook/Planner. SA = 45% D = 13% A = 39% SD = 3% I have learned about student organizations and how to get involved on campus by using the Student Handbook/Planner. SA = 35% D = 29% A = 29% SD = 3% I have been informed of upcoming events on campus by using the Student Handbook/Planner. SA = 39% D = 3% A = 55% SD = 0% The Student Handbook/Planner is easy to use. SA = 61% D = 10% A = 29% SD = 0% It is easy to find information in the Student Handbook/Planner. SA = 52% D = 3% A = 45% SD = 0% What do you like most about the Student Handbook/Planner that you wouldn't want changed? • The calendar is lengthy and it has "no school" dates • The phone numbers • The wealth of information • The size is perfect • The planner contains everything a new student would need to know • Plastic "things to do today" divider and measurer, makes it easy to get right to the page • That the entire week can been seen on both pages when the book is open • The monthly calendars at the top of each page • How school events and important dates are on each day . Lots of space for writing • How it is set with the calendar/planner, and there is enough room to write all the notes • That the book is given to you at the beginning of the year . UNLV events that are posted on the days they occur . Format you provide enough space in the calendar section . The calendar portion • Size if perfect . Perfect size . Plenty of writing space • The calendar and extra information in it • I enjoy the information on the back, highlights of holidays and events bolded in red • The wide use of space used to write schedules down is very useful! • I enjoy the space you get for each day enabling me to write down multiple tasks • I like the reminders for events on each day - this helps out a lot! • I love this thing -the whole planner • Everything is right at the student's fingertips, plus if used right can help a student be organized • The map on the back cover • The events and holidays are noted • Telling you the dates of the home football games • I like the big block of space allotted for each day - it allows to write down full assignments and reminders for one day • All the events are listed on the day they will happen at the bottom of each day - this leaves room on top for assignments, etc. • The students organizations are listed in the back - a definite good move • I love the map • I learned a lot about the school through the handbook • Events printed on the days of occurrence • Telephone numbers at the back of the book and calendar • That on-campus events are pre-entered on the calendar pages • Amount of space for each date • That is it free • The notes page . It's free • Format - large squares notes on events • Love it all - don't change it • That information about campus resources is readily available - I don't have too keep a million pieces of paper What change would you make to the Student Handbook/Planner? • It should have events like try-outs or anything planned in advance @ the Thomas & Mack • It should also have less of these pages in the middle of the calendar • Famous quotes and study tips for each week • Add finals week schedule • Estimated week of new class schedules to come out..."look for..." • The "things to do today" plastic marker falls out too easily - is there a way to make it stay on the rings better? • Dividers indicating where different info is located to quick references . None, I like it the way it is . None • I would like dance recitals and concerts and special lectures posted also • Class schedule portion maybe expanded and make it a little more customized to relate to UNLV's class time frames (i.e. 8:30 - 9:45, 10:00 - 11:15, etc.) . List all IFC and Pan-Hellenic rush dates and really push getting involved on campus . Make the grey logos more transparent so the writing is more visible. Those grey alumni and Reb guy logos on the pages are very irritating • Give everything that is red is the planner a 1 pixel black outline - that would be great . Make the ridges in the clear bookmark all the way not just in 3 sections . The purpose of our handbook is to better get our minds firmly grasped around one thing - time. This uniquely human awareness of our standing in a past, present, and future continuum allows choice of what is and what will be. The more views we have of our position in times river the better will be our choices of possibility. UNLV is an institution of futures. All light stone into each individual's timeline of possibility solitudes better choices, for this reason my I suggest your attention and consideration be directed to: A) mission statement - seeing your plan, writing down your plan is both clarifying and rejuvenating. B) project planning sheet - convenient and easily located. C) monthly calendar - another view of time that is helpful and contextual. D) Stickers - attention and focus on those events most important. Finally, may I thank all who gave time and resource to enrich the life a total stranger. These observations are given only in the spirit of humble appreciation. Thank you! • None - thanks! • No changes are needed but maybe add a section or pocket to insert cards (i.e. RebelCard, money, a picture, that would most definitely be wishful . Not much • A few more pages for notes • Put coupons in it and a GPA grading scale (i.e. 4.0 = A, etc.) . Please include the home schedule of the girl's volleyball, girls and boys soccer - all sports home and away schedules. Please put the time each event is starting . I don't like the grad "UNLV Alumni" and "CSUN Student Government" logos behind the days - when writing down stuff, it gets lost in the gray and makes it hard to read . Put a sheet in front for personal information in case someone loses their planner, you can get it back to them easier • No changes - except should write down recreational activity • Require all clubs to give information, correct grammatical errors and use spell check > Have the planner go up until the beginning of the next semester (fall) • Lighten the watermark on the calendar pages or remove them • Have 2 boxes per day as opposed to 1 • Smaller print of the UNLV events already marked • Earlier distribution and more calendar pages: there should not be times when you can't plan ahead. The planner should be distributed on campus when the prior planner ends, the planner should have a week more overlap so that returning students who get it on the first day of classes can use it till first week of classes next school year, additional pages (perhaps month at glance) should be available for planning events beyond the scope of the school year. . No watermark on the calendar pages • More space to write in the day-to-day section . Less UNLV information pages . Its kind of hard to really write over UNLV decal - maybe fade that • None - it's perfect . Webpage for the writing center, hours for the writing center, student computer help desk e-mail, web mail and summit websites other websites related to organizations, write your own frequently used website section (like phone book) Bill 08 of the 33rd Senate Session Introduced by: Senator Nikki Flinner Summary: A few simple modifications to the statutes to reflect changes to bylaws from the Bylaws Certification Process that took place fall 2002. We, the Consolidated Students of the University of Nevada, represented in the CSUN Senate, do enact as follows: 201.0 CSUN STANDING BOARD, COMMUTES, AND DEPARTMENTS 201.02 The standing boards, committees and departments of CSUN shall be as follows: A. Entertainment and Programming Board B. Rebel Radio Board C. Elections Board D. CSUN Services Board E. Nevada Student Affairs F. Office of Student Information G. Bylaws Committee H. Constitutional Revisions Committee I. Rules and Ethics Committee J. Ways and Means Committee K. Campus Safety and Awareness Committee [L.Educational Polices Committee] [M.] L. Student Body President's Advisory Councils 205.12 Dismissal of a director, chair or department head shall be carried out in accordance with Senate Bylaw [#22.] #31- Executive Board Right to Dismiss Bylaw March 5, 2003 Dear Student Senators, I am writing on behalf of the students in Dr. Strand's spring semester Model United Nations class (POS 489). We will represent the UNLV campus and community at the 2003 Model United Nations of the Far West (MUNFW) conference. The competition encompasses numerous aspects of debate, leadership, and communication skills. The 53rd annual session of the MUNFW will be held April 25, 2003 through the 29th in Burlingame, California. UNLV has been selected to represent Sweden and Malaysia at this year's conference. The tradition of model UN started in the fifties when high schools in the United States began to incorporate the simulation of parliamentary debate into their curricula. It has grown to the international level, and now nearly 60,000 students participate worldwide. As the ambassadors or delegates of their respective countries, student must fulfill certain requirements before departing for the MUNFW. Creating country profiles is one of the first tasks we undertake. This helps the student to understand the perspective of his or her country on certain issues. We then utilize this knowledge to write policy papers on the issues that MUNFW has listed on their agenda. The agenda includes concerns about peace and security, human rights, the environment, food and hunger, economic development, globalization and more. Finally, we must draft resolutions that will be discussed and voted on at the conference. In short, Model UN is a simulation of the UN where we will not only learn about the UN and international affairs but also hone our oratory skills. Along with learning the intricacies of the UN, Dr. Strand's class emphasizes useful communication and debate techniques that will serve the student well beyond the scope of the course. We will deal with current events that are discussed and voted on in the UN, thusly giving the student a unique international experience. We are researching several avenues regarding funding. Scholarships will be available through the UNLV International Programs office for students that qualify. Not all students will qualify and the scholarships will only cover a portion of the costs. We are asking for financial support from CSUN. Our approximate budget is as follows: -coach class air fare $192 -hotel $128 a night quad occupancy for 4 nights, ($128 per student total) -registration fee of $65 -food, ground transportation, and miscellaneous costs (e.g., photocopies) will be paid for by each student The total per student for airfare, hotel, and registration is approximately $385. 11 students enrolled in the class. We are requesting $200 of support per student for a total request of $2200. After returning from the conference we will create a display on our experiences in particular and the UN in general. This display will be housed at the Student Union, Lied Library, or other available location. We want to inform other UNLV students of the opportunities Model UN offers and share our experiences. As student ambassadors, we hope you will understand the importance of this hands-on experience. Any aid you can provide will be greatly appreciated. For more information on MUNFW see www.munfw.org.
