GOLD COAST motorists will soon say goodbye to the delays and frayed tempers that for so long have been syn- onymous with the Christmas-New Year period. City Council works commit- tee chairman, Alderman Trevor CoOniber, said multi-million dollar road development proj- ects by the council and Main Roads Department meant the notorious tourist season traffic snarls and bottlenecks would soon be a bad memory. Aid Coomber said since a Main i Roads Department study in 1980, the council had been working to solve the tourist strip?╟╓s traffic prob- I iems. ?╟úWith the Commonwealth Bi- I centenial road development fund- ling and road works it has come ?√ßeven closer to its target,?╟Ñ Aid ICoomber said. A major part of the plan is the ?√ßconstruction of an alternative ?√ßnorth-south route to take pressure loff the Gold Coast Highway and ?√ßFerry Road. Bridge ?╟úCosting $2.8 million the new frmte will be a boon to motorists in ak hour as well as during the holiday season,?╟Ñ Aid Coomber aid. An extension to Oxley Drive, from Brisbane Road to Pine Ridge toad, Southport is due to be com- peted by the end of next month. A $360,000 bridge to span a Ifuture canal at the Pacific Waters state is an important part of the project. will make HI' Christmas traffic chaos a bad memory, says Coomber The bridge, to be built by Gold Coast youth under a Federal Gov- ernment jobs scheme, will link in with Olsen Avenue, Government Road and Musgrave Avenue. ?╟úBy December 1988 the new route will connect that stage with Nerang Road, Currumburra Road, and Ross Street, Carrara, with a new bridge across the Nerang River, to join the Nerang- Broadbeach Road,?╟Ñ Aid Coomber said. ?╟úThe council will be spending $3.7 million on the Olsen Avenue project,?╟Ñ he said. ?╟úAbout $1.5 million was spent developing Wardoo Street, which opened six months ago, and will another major part of the link.?╟Ñ Aid Coomber said the Main Roads Departments plan to con- nect Smith Street, Southport, with the GavenrWay, would take traffic coming from Brisbane to the Coast along the new north-south road, avoiding Ferry Road and the Highway. ?╟úThe Hope Island bridge and roadworks, to be completed by De- cember this year, and the widening of Bundall Road, by the Main Roads Department will both help put an end to the Christmas cha- os," he said. ?╟≤ See Opinion Page 6 TRIO MOTORS YOUR DAIHATSU DEALER ON THE GOLD COAST FOR SALES AND SERVICE Ph. 584566 PARKINS^ AIR CONDITIONING PTY.LTI SOLE AUTHORISED GOLD COAST CARRIER DEALER DUCTED SYSTEM FROM $3350 PHONE 396111 24-HOUR SERVICE FOR jCALUFm^ JEBEE DESlGfeMjRgB^ ?╟≤ THE Saturday edition of the Gold Coast Bulletin will in future cost 40 cents. This rise has been forced by sharply escalating costs of newsprint. The Saturday edition of the Bulletin, which recently has been running at 200 pages, costs far more than 40 cents an edition to produce in newsprint costs alone. Major Saturday papers throughout Australia are already higher priced than their weekday editions.
