FRIDAY, DECEMBER ?9, 1958 MIAMI BEACH SUN Sophie Reigns Supreme As Latin Quarter Reopens By PAUL M. BRUUN E. M. Loew premiered his winter night club season one week earlier than usual this year at his plush Latin Quarter on Palm Island last night, yet he doesn't have his name on the program as PRESENTS. He gives top billing to Donn Arden, producer, whose ' roster of clients reads like theatrical Who's Who. Before I run out of space, I want to tell you of the first show stopper of this season. This is the Holger and Dolores dance team in its first local showing. Class and talent always makes themselves known and without advance billing, this banker in appearance male and fascinatingly bodied female command the attention of every patron in their Miami Beach debut. One thing is for sure and that is there is no weight added to Dolores by excessive costume material. They have some . lightning fast man- uvers in their act that will be missed if your eyes aren't glued to them every second they are on stage. Pretzel designers might take cues from the shapes and forms into which Dolores is bent, for here is an example of physical fitness and agility, blended with class and showmanship with the always masterful Holger staying in the background. The audi?╟÷ ence was enthusiastic throughout their act, which continuously was interrupted with generous applause. The ceiling almost prevented their performing some of the high lifts to full advantage, but the overhead mirrors added interest to this act, the first real show stopper of this season's openings. For over two years, the Bruun family has been unhappy that no local impresario has presented our dear friend, Sohie Tucker. We have long loved this woman for herself and have long admired her as an entertainer. To many of us, Sophie Tucker is more than a person. She is an institution, a legend, an inspiration, a tradition, as well as an international humanitarian. No one who treads the boards today tops Sophie fucker with showmanship or with ability. Sophie always comes to our town with compelling new numbers that tickle your funny bone. They sometimes give out with intelligent philosophy and which are always presented with that ex- ra something that belongs exclusively to Sophie Tucker. As always, Sophie is breathlessly gowned in exquisite taste. Her opening song is in the form of a greeting, this one dedicated to "Scientists can do anything, but they Can't make an old lady out of me." In this new routine you learn things you never knew about those responsible for our missile program. Sophie's next concerned with the Steve Allen book in which he referred to Sophie as trading j on nostalgia. Sophie interprets j- this to the lyrics of a tune, "I'm j as modern as tomorrow and as old as yesterday." This year Sophie has dispensed with a "message" tune but she has one dedicated to "Have Fun." It contains some suggestions most of us could take with beneficial results. She as a number pertaining to, "There may be half a million Second Sophie Tuckers but there isn't one exactly like me." This is the base for Sophie covering her fabulous career with a hit tune she introduced from each of the 10- year periods of her theatrical life. On the tables were cards with the words to "Some of These Days.", Sophie pulled a switch, having the audience sing the tune to her. One of Sophie's new routines concerns a couple who have the room next to her's in the Roney Plaza. It is the ultimatum delivered to the husband in the garment industry who is always entertaining woman buyers and leaving his wife at home. The wife is demanding some entertainment. This is one of those real Sophie Tucker trademark numbers everybody enjoys. With Sophie's accompanist Red Shapiro filling in for three minutes, while Sophie changed her costume, she emerges in what is probably the most costly calypso outfit of all time. It is a gold creation that shimmies when Sophie shakes, complete with tor- reador pants. She sings a song of the island. "Lady From Trinidad." By now, the customers realize (as if there were ever a question) that they were in the presence of a theatrical great. Sophie added that necessary spark to a great show that makes for sensational entertainment. And now for as much reviewing of the show as space permits. The show at the Latin Quarter is entitled "Sky High." Scene one emphasizes "Stratospheric Holiday." This introduces the boys and the girls and presents the first view of a gala parade of brilliant costumes. As far as I can tell, the girls at the Latin Quarter are different than those from previous shows. They are young and beautiful and display much of thoir gorgeous shapes. There are three featured girl vocalists, the Del Rubio Triplets, who are featured throughout the revue in elaborate gowns. \9S9:9nM\V ?√ß H3T3A DNI 'AI1N JLSUIJ S,3aiSdHf1S ?╟÷ 1S3 ONiaivdaa A>naM3f a SWWHD siuvad a SJL313D S3HDJLVAV A113AON onv YAOina NI913 'V93WO and Mister Hambones and Topsy and Miss Eva. At the end, Miss Tucker introduced the entire cast to thunderous applause. There was no doubt that E. M. Loew has a hit show on his hands. This year, there are no construc tion obstruction* Into the Latin Quarter which makes it more accessible than it was last year. The show was well supported musically by Jose Cortex and his orchestra, with Chaves playing the continental music. The Latin Quarter has long been recognized for its superior night club kftefc* en and last night found the same condition existing. For a swell time in a magnificent club, make a reservation tot the Palm Island Latin Quarter. m^-^- TO SAY THANK YOU FOR YOUR LOVELY/yTELEGRAM St ^c^~~ Qy^J^
