ANNOUNCEMENTS STUDENT BODY PRESIDENT RODERICK COLEBROOK: I'D LIKE TO SAY THANKS TO THE STUDENT GOVERNMENT MEMBERS THAT WERE AT THE JAMES BRADY LECTURE. It WENT OF VERY WELL, AND IT WAS COVERED IN THE NATIONAL NEWS, ON CNN, "60 MLNUTES," AND IN THE LOCAL MEDIA MANY PEOPLE HAVE CALLED US AND APOLOGIZED TO STUDENT GOVERNMENT FOR THEIR RUDE ACTIONS. WE WANTED TO PRESENT AN EDUCATIONAL FORUM FOR STUDENTS TO ATTEND SO THAT THEY COULD HEAR ANOTHER SIDE TO A CONTROVERSIAL ISSUE, BUT IT DID NOT WORK OUT THAT WAY DUE TO RUDE PEOPLE. I AM PROUD OF THE STUDENTS AS THEY ACTED IN A PROFESSIONAL MANNER. As FAR AS CAREER DAY, I THANK THOSE WHO HELPED, IT WAS ONE OF THE BEST EVER, AND EVERYONE PRESENT SENATOR ANGELL ABSENT SENATOR BOOTH (EXCUSED) UNIVERSITY OF NEVADA, LAS VEGAS/4505 MARYLAND PARKWAY/LAS VEGAS, NEVADA 89154-20 09/(702) 739-3477 SENATE MINUTES 22-06 PAGE SEVEN J Y D A G « W F S G E ¥ 9 « E WORD OUT. THE HOTEL ASSOCIATION AND THE STUDENT ALUMNI ASSOCIATION DID GREAT JOBS. STUDENT BODY VICE PRESIDENT KEVIN BRIGGS: I'D LIKE TO REITERATE WHAT RODERICK SAID. I HEARD SEVERAL COMPANIES SAY THAT THIS WAS THE BEST CAREER DAY THEY HAVE ATTENDED ON ANY CAMPUS. IT SET THE BUILDING BLOCKS FOR THE FUTURE. I AM SORRY THAT I COULDN'T GO TO THE BRADY LECTURE, BUT IN A WAY, I AM RELIEVED THAT I COULDN'T GO AS WELL. VICE PRESIDENT PRO TEMPORE HEIDI SMITH: THE NOMINATIONS FOR THE FACULTY EXCELLENCE AWARD ARE DUE TODAY. I AM SURE THAT THE SENATE WILL HAVE THEIR NOMINATIONS IN TO ME BY THE END OF THE MEETING. We ARE WORKING ON A CERTIFICATE TO GIVE TO JERRY TARKANIAN FOR HIS CONSECUTIVE WINS, IT WILL BE IN THE OFFICE FRIDAY TO BE SIGNED, SO PLEASE COME IN TO SIGN IT. SENATE PRESIDENT PRO TEMPORE BENNEMAN: THE RETREAT IS SCHEDULED FOR SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 29TH, AND IT IS MANDATORY. MEET AT 9 A.M. IN THE MSU PARKING LOT. TRANSPORTATION WILL BE PROVIDED. I ATTENDED THE PARKING AND TRAFFIC COMMITTEE MEETING, AND THE STUDENTS ARE OVERWHELMINGLY AGAINST A PARKING FEE. THEY ARE NOW LOOKING INTO CHARGING A FEE FOR GUESTS AT CONCERTS AND PLAYS AT HAM HALL THAT OCCUR ON THE WEEKENDS. THE THOMAS AND MACK HAVE EARNED OVER ONE MILLION DOLLARS THROUGH PARKING FEES AT EVENTS HELD AT THE T&M. THE P&T COMMITTEE IS LOOKING INTO ADDING 230 SPACES NEAR THE BIOLOGY BUILDING. THE KUNV INDEPENDENCE COMMITTEE SUB-COMMITTEES ARE WORKING ON THE POLICIES AND I WOULD LIKE TO THANK SENATOR HOBREIGH FLSCHER, SENATOR ROMERO, AND EVEN THE "BIG MAN," JOEL KOSTMAN. SENATOR FISHER: IS THE COMMITTEE STILL TALKING ABOUT ADDING A STUDENT PARKING FEE? SENATE PRESIDENT PRO TEMPORE BENNEMAN: THEY ARE STILL LOOKING AT OPTIONS, AND AFTER HEARING ABOUT THE REVENUES FROM THE T&M, THEY ARE SERIOUSLY CONSIDERING CHARGING FOR EVENTS AT HAM HALL AND USING THE MONEY FOR THE POSSIBLE CONSTRUCTION OF A PARKING GARAGE. THE STUDENT PARKING FEE IS ON HOLD, AND I DON'T FORESEE IT FOR NEXT FALL. SENATE PRESIDENT MIKE KENNEDY: AT THE SENATE MEETING NEXT WEEK, WE WILL HAVE A GUEST SPEAKER, REGENT SHELLEY BERKLEY. SHE HAS INFORMED ME THAT SHE WOULD LIKE SOME INPUT ON WHAT YOU ARE INTERESTED IN HEARING FROM HER. THE NEXT MEETING WILL BE NEXT WEDNESDAY AT 5:00 P.M. IN MSU 201. V . BOARD, COMMITTEE, AND DIRECTOR REPORTS DIRECTOR JOEL KOSTMAN, OSI: I AM WORKING ON A LETTER TO BE SENT TO JAMES AND SARAH BRADY, AND IT WILL BE READY ON FRIDAY. WE WILL HAVE 98 ORGANIZATIONS AFTER THIS MEETING. HE INTRODUCED ASSISTANT DIRECTOR WAVEY REED. DIRECTOR BRYAN COX, APPROPRIATIONS: THE APPROPRIATIONS ARE GOING PRETTY GOOD, LIKE NICK SAID. THERE IS A BIG BATCH UP FOR SENATE APPROVAL, AND I HOPE THEY ALL GO THROUGH. LOR I SNYDER, CSUN BUSINESS MANAGER: HERE ARE THE BUDGET FORMAT SHEETS (SHE PASSED THEM OUT) WHICH ARE AS UP TO DATE AS CAN BE. THE BOARD OF REGENTS ARE HAVING A VIDEO CONFERENCE ON THE 19TH WHICH WILL CONCERN ITSELF WITH THE 1990-1991 AUDIT REPORT FROM CSUN. DIRECTOR PAUL STUHFF, NSA: As FAR AS THE PARKING FEE IS CONCERNED I THINK THAT IF THE HAM HALL FEES ARE USED TOWARDS MORE PARKING SPACES AND THAT IF STUDENTS ARE ALLOWED TO PARK FOR FREE, THEN IT IS ALRIGHT. NSA IS PUTTING ON THE VOTER REGISTRATION DRIVE THIS YEAR, AND IT IS BASICALLY THE SAME THING THAT WAS DONE LAST YEAR. MIKE QUICK, CAREER DAYS: CAREER DAYS WENT WELL, BUT THE CSUN SHOWING WAS PATHETIC. If YOU WANT TO KNOW WHAT CAREER DAY WAS LIKE, GO TO IT NEXT YEAR. DIRECTOR WARREN WHITE, E&P: THOSE WHO MISSED THE BRADY LECTURE REALLY MISSED OUT, AND THE BRADY'S WEREN'T REALLY UPSET, THEY WERE JUST SAD THAT THE STUDENTS WERE CHEATED. YOU ALL NEED TO GIVE RODERICK A HAND, HE STOOD UP TO DR. ACKERMAN WHEN HE WANTED TO STOP THE LECTURE DURING THE RUDE COMMENTS (RIOT) AT HAM HALL. WE ARE HAVING A VALENTINE'S DAY DANCE AND A SNEAK PREVIEW OF "RADIO FLYER". ALSO, PLEASE COME HEAR DR. KUNJUFU SPEAK. He ANSWERED QUESTIONS ABOUT THE T-SHIRTS AND HOMECOMING. CHAIRMAN SCOTT FISHER, RULES: WE HELD A MEETING AND MIKE YOUNG HAS BEEN APPOINTED VLCE CHAIR. I APOLOGIZE THAT THE RULES ARE LATE, BUT THE ONLY CHANGES ARE TO TIGHTEN UP THE LOOPHOLES, AND MAKE IT EASIER TO UNDERSTAND. THERE HAVE BEEN CHARGES FILED AGAINST PEOPLE, BUT IF ANYONE WANTS TO SPEAK TO ME ABOUT IT, DO IT AFTER THE MEETING. SPEECHES ARE DUE, DO THEM. MOTION CARRIED BY VOICE VOTE. MOTION TO TABLE ITEM D OF NEW BUSINESS BY SENATOR HUANG. MOTION CARRIED BY VOICE VOTE. X. OPEN DISCUSSION SENATOR BARKHUEE: I AM MAD, THE MSU SHOULDN'G CHARGE!! THE STUDENT ALUMNI CENTER TRIED TO GET THE "BOOTH" AND IT WAS ALL TAKEN, AND THE MSU WOULDN'T ALLOW US TO PUT UP A TABLE IN THE STUDENT UNION BECAUSE IT WOULD LOOK LIKE A "FLEAMARKET." I WENT AND YELLED AT ERIC WALTERS, AND IF ANY OTHER ORGANIZATIONS HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM, I SUGGEST YOU DO IT, TOO. SENATOR STUHEE: No COMMENTS. SENATOR HUANG No COMMENTS. SENATOR DUBOWSKY: CAREER DAY WENT REALLY WELL. I WAS REALLY IMPRESSED . SENATOR ANGELL: No COMMENTS. SENATOR WEBER: No COMMENTS. SENATOR ORTEGA: I GOT MY VOICE BACK. CONGRATULATIONS DIRECTOR BUNIN. SORRY, PAUL, I COULDN'T VOTE FOR PAYING THE VOTER REGISTRARS WHEN I REGISTER PEOPLE FOR FREE. SENATOR NALDER: THE BRADY LECTURE WENT REALLY WELL, AND IT IS GOOD TO HAVE CONTROVERSIAL ISSUES ON CAMPUS. COME TO SOFTBALL PRACTICE ON SATURDAY AT 2P.M. IF YOU DON'T PRACTICE, YOU DON'T PLAY. THERE IS A PROBLEM WITH A COUPLE OF PEOPLE SITTING IN THE OFFICE ON THE CREDENZA OR COUCH SWEARING AND GOSSIPING. It IS REALLY ANNOYING TO STUDENTS, AND I REALLY THINK IT SHOULD STOP. THEY SHOULD TAKE IT TO THE CONFERENCE ROOM, IF THEY HAVE TO, BUT IT IS REALLY UNPROFESSIONAL. LAST WEEK, I MADE SOME COMMENTS ABOUT SENATOR ELSHER, AND IT WAS VERY TOUGH FOR ME TO DO IT, I've BEEN REALLY UPSET. I WAS UNDER A MISCONCEPTION ABOUT SENATOR EISHER, AND, AFTER TALKING TO HIM, I FEEL THAT HE WAS NOT FULLY RESPONSIBLE FOR HIS COMMENTS, BUT RATHER WAS RELAYING A MESSAGE FROM MLKE QUICK. I'M SORRY, SCOTT, IF I MADE PEOPLE THINK THAT YOU ARE NOT HONEST. I HOPE YOU ALL TAKE THIS AND CAN STILL ASK HIM QUESTIONS AND THAT YOU DON'T HOLD HIM TOTALLY RESPONSIBLE. SENATOR DEVINE: I WOULD LIKE TO REITERATE JAMI AND WARREN'S COMMENTS ABOUT THE BRADY'S. THEY KNEW WHO TO BLAME, AND WERE NOT UPSET AT UNLV. THEY THOUGHT THAT WE WERE REALLY GREAT, AND THE BEST EVER FOR SUPPORT. I HAVE BEEN ON THE SENATE FOR TWO WEEKS NOW, AND NOTHING IS EVER DONE TO PORTRAY CSUN POSITIVELY. RATHER, WE ARE SHOWN AS EVIL PEOPLE ATTEMPTING TO SCREW STUDENTS. ALSO, THESE PROBLEMS BETWEEN THE SENATORS IS REALLY UNPROFESSIONAL AND IMMATURE. WE ARE FOR THE CONSTITUENTS, AND SHOULD DO THINGS FOR THE STUDENTS. JAMI SENATE MINUTES 22-06 PAGE SEVEN X. OPEN DISCUSSION, CONTINUED SHOULD BE COMMENDED RATHER THAN PROSECUTED. SENATOR AMEND: I WAS IMPRESSED WITH CAREER DAY, BUT NEXT YEAR, I WOULD LIKE TO SE MORE COMPANIES THAT ARE NOT JUST HOTEL OR BUSI-NESS. SENATOR FISCHER: As FAR AS THE MSU GOES, PHI ALPHA DELTA ALSO HAS TRIED TO GET THE BOOTH, AND WERE SCREWED BY THE MSU. I APOLOGIZE FOR THE FAUX PAS IN PARLIAMENTARY PROCEDURE, BUT I WAS TIRED. W-E HAVE TO GET RID OF THE BAD PRESS, AND WE NEED TO INFORM STUDENTS THAT THERE TWO SIDES TO EVERY STORY. SENATOR ROMERO: CAREER DAY WAS WELL PLANNED. SENATOR YOUNG: No COMMENTS. SENATOR FISHER: I ACTUALLY SAW KAREN (SPLAWN) LAUGH TODAY. WE'RE HERE AS A SENATE TO MAKE DECISIONS. AND THE ONLY TIME THAT WE AS SENATORS SHOULD ABSTAIN IS IF WE ARE INVOLVED IN THE ITEM THAT IS IT BE VOTED ON. If YOU ARE NOT SURE OF AN ITEM, THEN YOU SHOULD VOTE NO. BE RESPONSIBLE FOR YOUR VOTE. ALOT OF PEOPLE WERE VERY UPSET AT THE WAY MLKE QUICK ACTS TO OTHERS, THAT IS WHY I VOTED AGAINST HIM AS STUDENT SERVICES DIRECTOR, AND I WAS THE ONLY SEN-ATOR TO DO so. IT'S IN THE RECORDS, LOOK IT UP. AND REMEMBER. CRYSTAL'S FREE. AS FAR AS THE BRADY DINNER, AT LEAST IT RAISED-- SOME EYEBROWS. I THINK THAT MAYBE WE SHOULD BRING IN SOMEONE WHO IS IN THE NRA SO THAT JLM AND SARAH (BRADY) CAN BOO AND SPIT SOME TOBACCO ON HIM. E&P, LOOK IT TO, IT'S YOUR RESPONSIBILITY. ON CAREER DAY, I HEARD IT WENT WELL. THE EXECUTIVE BOARD TOOK A VERY BIG CHANGE ON BRINGING BRADY HERE. AND I TOLD "PRESIDENT MICKEY™ THAT. I DIDN'T BLACKMAIL JAMI INTO SAYING WHAT SHE DID TODAY. I AM ALSO DROPPING MY CHARGES. I NEED TO SPEAK TO THE MEMBERS AND THE TWO ALTERNATIVES TO THE RULES COMMITTEE AFTER THE MEETING, SO PLEASE STAY SO THAT WE CAN DISCUSS WHEN THE NEXT RULES MEETING IS GOING TO BE HELD. As FOR THE COMMENTS MADE DURING THIS MEETING, THEY SHOW ME THAT THE PERSON WHO SAID THEM SHOWS TOTAL IGNORANCE. IT WASN'T PERSONAL, AND I DID WHAT ANY SENATOR SHOULD DO, I ACTED COMPLETELY IN THE RIGHT MANNER. I FILED THE COMPLAINT IN THE WAY THAT IS CORRECT. YOU CAN THINK THAT IT IS PERSONAL OR NOT, BUT I DID THE RIGHT THING. VICE PRESIDENT PRO TEMPORE SMITH: As FAR AS GIVING THE OTHER SIDE A CHANCE, WE DON'T NEED TO, THE NRA IS ALREADY BRINGING A SPEAKER ON CAMPUS. I WILL SEE EACH OF YOU WITH YOUR FACULTY EXCELLENCE-- AWARD NOMINATIONS AFTER THE MEETING. I AM NOTING GOING TO RAG ON YOU ABOUT CAREER DAY OR THE BRADY LECTURE, BUT I AM GOING TO FOR SOFTBALL PRACTICE. LAST TIME, ONLY 6 PEOPLE SHOWED UP. EVERYONE NEEDS TO BE THERE, AND IF YOU ARE NOT, YOU HAD BETTER HAVE A VERY PRIMO EXCUSE. VICE RPESIDENT BRIGGS: THIS IS THE FIRST TIME THAT UNLV HAS EVER MADE NATIONAL NEWS (WITH THE BRADY LECTURE). As FAR AS THE MOYER STUDENT UNION IS CONCERNED, MAYBE THE SENATE SHOULD TAKE ACTION-- AND MAKE UP A RESOLUTION TO DISTRIBUTE TO PRES. MAXSON, THE PAPER D R . ACKERMAN, THE FACULTY SENATE, AND THE BOARD OF REGENTS. TAKE SOME ACTION, YOU HAVE VOICED ENOUGH CONCERN, NOW DO SOMETHING TO FIX THE PROBLEM. SENATE PRESIDENT PRO TEMPORE BENNEMAN: Do THE SPEECHES. YOU NEED TO GET OUT AND TALK TO YOUR CALSSES. YOU KNOW, THE MSU HAS BEGUN TO REMIND ME OF THE "Ch-ChIANG" COMMERCIALS. It IS TIME TO DRAFT SENATE MINUTES 22-06 PAGE SEVEN X . OPEN DISCUSSION, CONTINUED A RESOLUTION. THE MEMO...IT HAD SOME CONTROVERSIES, I WAS YELLED AT, THREATENED, ETC. BUT I JUST WANTED THIS SENATE TO BEGIN SEE-ING, REALLY LOOKING AT, WHAT IS VOTED ON. WHEN THIS ITEM CAME UP FOR A VOTE, I SAW RED FLAGS ALL OVER THE PLACE. YOU ALSO NEED TO KNOW THAT YOU DON'T HAVE TO VOTE FOR EVERYTHING. YOU CAN ABSTAIN AND SOMETIMES YOU HAVE TO. READ YOUR AGENDAS AND RESEARCH ISSUES THAT PERTAIN TO THE ITEMS. It IS NOT A GOOD IDEA TO DO IT AT THE LAST MINUTE. SENATE PRESIDENT KENNEDY: IT IS GOOD TO HEAR COMMENTS FROM EVERY ONE OF THE NEW SENATORS. It IS GOOD TO GET RIGHT INVOLVED. ABOUT THE BRADY LECTURE, THERE WERE ALOT OF HECKLERS AND THERE WERE AS MANY CHEERING FOR THE BRADY'S. THE MOST SUPORTIVE WERE THE SLGMA CHI FRATERNITY, AND THEY HAVE MY COMPLIMENTS. I HAD A MEMO WHICH CONCERNED SPECIAL TOPICS IN STUDENT GOVERNMENT, BUT THEY HAVE BE-COME DIFFUSED FOR THE MOST PART. THE CONTROLLER'S OFFICE IS NOW INVESTIGATING IF THERE WAS ANY WRONGDOING (LEGALLY) CONCERNING A CERTAIN TRIP TO FLORIDA. I HAVE APPOINTED TWO ALTERNATES TO THE RULES COMMITTEE, AND NOW WILL HAVE TO APPOINT A THIRD, DUE TO THE FACT THAT SENATOR DEVINE HAS STATED HIS OPINION CONCERNING SENA-TOR NALDER, AND THEY SHOW A BIAS. THERE ARE TWO QUESTIONS RULES NEEDS TO CONSIDER: 1) Is A SENATOR COMPELLED TO ENFORCE THE PROVISIONS OF CSUN AS STATED IN THE CONSTITUTION? 2) IF SO, DID SENATOR NALDER VIOLATE THE CONSTITUTION? I LOOK FORWARD TO THE MEETING, AND HOPE THAT ALL CHARGES ARE VERY THOROUGHLY RESEARCHED. I ALSO THINK THAT IT IS TERRIFIC THAT THE SITUATION BETWEEN SENATORS NALDER AND FLSHER WERE HANDLED IN SO PROFESSIONAL AND MATURE A MANNER BETWEEN THEMSELVES. X . ADJOURNMENT SENATE PRESIDENT MIKE KENNEDY ADJOURNED THE MEETING AT 6:58 P.M.
