The Lion's Voice The Monthly Chronicle of Adat Ari El A Reform Congregation Embracing Traditional Judaism May 2000 26 Nisan - 26 lyar Vol. IX ? Issue No. 5 KOL HARAV...The Rabbi's Voice Choi Hamoed Disney Pesach, or Passover, for an observant family first means a lot of work. Preparing the home by cleaning out all of the Chometz, changing the dishes, Kashering the pots and silverware, relining the shelves of the refrigerator, drawers and cabinets is a big job. It means preparing for the first Seder and then the second Seder. After the first two holy days of the holiday, there are intermediate days called Choi Hamoed. They lay between the first two holy days and the last two, ending with a Yizkor, or Memorial service. At sundown, the family would then break Pesach by eating Chometz again...bread, cake (you know, the moist tasty kind), or any other restricted food that by the end of the week, one is already dreaming of the delectable delight. For as long as I can remember, my family stayed home and ate all our meals at home because it was easier to maintain strict control of our Kosher for Pesach needs. We thought a Disneyland trip would be a good idea because our three school aged children, who attend the Jewish Community Day School, would be out of school during Pesach, while the public and Christian schools would be back to school. We calculated that the lines to the rides would be smaller mid-week and our children would spend more time on the rides and less time standing around waiting. But, were we crazy to try this during Pesach, when we would have to shlep all our food? Disneyland usually carries Kosher food, but not even Kosher restaurants stay open during Pesach. When we got to the parking lot of Disneyland we noticed a steady stream of Frum, observant, Jewish families all toting large boxes and huge coolers with them. Could it be some congregational event being held at Disney we thought? While I was unloading our car, my children (the ones who talk) were greeting these Jewish people with, "Chag S'meiach!" The holiday greeting was returned time and again as we watched what could have looked like the Exodus into freedom. This year, however, we did something different. After the two Seders, and after Shabbat that followed the next day after Pesach, we took our family, all six of us, to Disneyland. Leslie would have to cook and prepare all of our meals in advance, pack it and we would shlep food in large coolers to California for three days. Rabbi Gary M. Jones Blvd., Las Vegas 89146 No longer did we feel crazy, but thought it was exciting that so many Jewish families were doing what we were doing. They must have figured out the same equation. Jewish schools out, the rest of the schools in session equals more fun at Disneyland. At lunch time we went out of the main gate to retrieve our huge heavy cooler from their new check in area and to their beautiful new picnic area. There I had to stand in line for a time as all of the other families were also checking out their Kosher for Passover lunches. Writing this column just a few days before Passover, I remember back to my childhood and the wonderful anticipation I felt at the coming of most Jewish holidays. Each holiday brought a unique joy; each created a feeling of family and community. I remember Passover seders, spent with family and friends, my mother, my grandmother and my mother's cousin slaving over hot stoves for hours preparing all my very favorite comfort foods - chopped liver, chicken soup and knaidlach, sweetbreads, liver stuffing, chicken, brisket, matzo farfel, potato kugel, and matzo cakes, cookies and marzipan sweets for dessert. It never failed to amaze me, the thought that the very same seder story we read every year, year after year, had been read by generations before us, long before I or my parents or even my grandparents had been bom. I can still feel the delight of finding the afikomen and collecting my bounty from each adult in the room. And then there was Sukkot. We lived in a huge apartment house, so building a sukkah was, unfortunately, not an option for us, but every year we would visit my mother's cousin, who did have a sukkah in his backyard. I looked forward to those meals and always considered them a real treat. I loved eating under stars (long before I knew what dining al fresco was, eating in the sukkah was exciting and trendy to me) and sometimes I'd even get to help with decorations. As a pre-teen, life just didnt seem to get any better than eating dinner in that backyard sukkah - even if we did have to bring the food down two flights of stairs - and schlep everything back up the stairs when we were through. I loved Rosh Hashanah. I enjoyed getting dressed in my very best clothes, feeling connected to every Jew in the world who listened to the same prayers and viewed the same tableau. As a teenager, I loved going for long walks with my friends, visiting all the other temples in the neighborhood, passing people I knew who were doing the same thing. What a sense of community! Purim was great ? what kid wouldn't delight in the pageantry and merriment of this holiday? And what kid wouldn't love receiving baskets overflowing with candy and cakes and cookies and wine? (Although my mother, party poop that she was, would confiscate the wine before I took possession of the baskets.) Looking back on those times brings comfort to me now - because I still feel the same sense of pride and honor and connection to every Jew who came before me. And every Jew destined to come after. Until next month, I remain, Bonni Spivak SCHMOOZERS NIGHT OUT THE SCHMOOZERS ARE GOING OUT TO SEE JOSEPH & HIS TECHNICOLOR DREAMCOA T AT THE SPRING MOUNTAIN RANCH ON SATURDAY, JUNE 10 at 8:00 P.M. THE TICKETS ARE $7 EACH; $5 FOR SENIORS. RESERVATIONS ARE A MUST AND MAY BE MADE BY CALLING BOBBIE KNEITEL AT THE SYNAGOGUE OFFICE BY JUNE 1. MORE INFORMATION ABOUT THE EVENT WILL FOLLOW. FROM OUR BOARD OF DIRECTORS Fellow Congregants, We are so blessed. We have a gifted Rabbi who tirelessly serves our Congregation. Our services are inspiring, uplifting, stimulating and consistently make worship meaningful. Our Congregation has numerous events and groups that allow for both a social and intellectual Jewish life through our Synagogue. And, while we have a home, it's only temporary. I believe that it's time for us as a Congregation to begin the process of seriously preparing for a permanent home for our Synagogue. We recently rented even more space, which we are rapidly outgrowing. The purchase of our own, permanent home becomes more necessary every month. With our own building, we would be able to establish a Jewish pre-school, as well as expand our current educational programs. We would cease to pay rent, and begin to pay on a mortgage, which has numerous benefits. And, above all, we would be able to create a facility to even further enhance our worship experience and the experience of the community at large. Let us begin the dialogue designed to generate funds for this worthy endeavor. Time is passing, and with every day that we fail to seek and obtain real money, our chances of acquiring our own home diminish as property values grow ever higher. Please feel free to contact me, or any member of your Board to discuss this crucial matter. Phil Devore, D.D.S. First Vice President MAY 23 - SPECIAL GENERAL MEETING On Tuesday, May 23, there will be a special general meeting at 7:00 P.M. The items we will be discussing include the financial status of the Synagogue; results of the recent survey regarding where our permanent Synagogue should be; and the next step in our search for suitable property. The Board of Directors invites all of our members, and any potential member, to join us and help shape the future of Adat Ari El. Together, we can build on the strong foundation we have all helped form. WANTED I need Y O U for our Telephone Committee. You will be assigned a limited list of congregants to phone and inform of upcoming Adat Ari El events. Call and let me know when I can add your name to the Committee. Corinne Fields Telephone Committee Chair WELCOME TO OUR NEW MEMBER... Edith Simms | Ko? Art El The Lion's Voice Page 3 Kol Harav (continued from page 1) Nearly all of the tables were Tilled with Jewish families having their lunches. Our family began our Birchat Hamazon, the grace after meal, and we heard others at their tables doing the same. A group of men found a shady spot to Daven, or pray, the afternoon service of Mincha and I joined them in the ritual. Later, while we were back into the park area, a young man came up to me and informed me of the time the evening service, Maariv, would take place in front of City Hall, a familiar spot at Disneyland. Our experience at Disneyland was special to my children to have this beautiful religious experience in a typically secular environment. One may expect Davening to take place on a plane to Israel, but the infiltration of Jewish souls mixed with the animated wonderland of Disneyland was an experience to treasure. We may even try to make it a new Golbart Minhag, or custom. Choi Hamoed Disney helped make Pesach fly by and made it so much fun. It was worth the schlep! Jewish Family Services Agency Shabbat on Friday, April 28 was sponsored by Dr. Lori Snipper, Vice President of Jewish Family Services, who was also our guest speaker for the evening. Her informative presentation of the work JFSA does for the entire community was enlightening and inspiring. We wish the organization much success in future ventures. Adat Ari El's commemorative Founders' Day Picnic was on April 30 at the lovely Rainbow Park. Bruce Feidman organized the event that included games, food, drink and, and a unicycling rabbi. Music was provided by The Dancing Machine MC/DJ, Alan Herzig, a member of our congregation. This yearly event celebrated the founding of Adat Ari El eight years ago and honored those whose foresight brought us all together. A new ULPAN (conversational Hebrew) class began on Wednesday, May 10 and will continue for eight consecutive weeks. Vardit Gesund is instructing the class that includes various levels of Hebrew competency. You may still register for the class by calling the Synagogue Office and for further information. The Israeli Independence Day celebration is being held on Sunday, May 21 from Noon ? 4:00 P.M. at the Academic Mall at UNLV. I will be leading a Jewish community wide Youth Choir for this event. Come out to hear the children, and have fun at the celebration. B'Shalom, Rabbi Gary M.
