KOL BAMIDBAR THE VOICE OF MIDBAR KODESH TEMPLE VOL. VI ISSUE 5 NISAN / IYAR 5760 MAY 2000 MIDBAR GALA WEEKEND MAY 19, 2 0 a n d 21 The weekend of May 19, 20 and 21 promises to be another milestone for Midbar Kodesh Temple and Green Valley Ranch when we gather to dedicate our building and hang a few more mezuzzot! Bar Mitzvah student Michael Naft will lead services on Friday evening, a GALA Dinner prepared by an award winning chef is on tap for Saturday evening, and a School Wing Dedication with our students will be some of the highlights. Michael Naft is the first Midbar Kodesh Temple student to celebrate his Bar Mitzvah in Israel. Michael, with sister Charlene and parents Ava and Richard, will stand atop Masada as he accepts his responsibility as a Jewish adult. Cantor Bob has been preparing him for this honor, and has asked the Nafts to share this simcha by having Michael lead the congregation on May 19. During that service Midbar Kodesh Temple will recount our dreams and celebrate our shared accomplishments. Youth Director Marci Riceberg, who will teach for the Clark County School District, will be honored. Congregants and guests will dine and dance in the Midbar Kodesh Social Hall once Shabbat has ended on Saturday evening, May 20th. Todd Sicolo, who has been featured in "Bon Appetite", "Gourmet", "People" and "Celebrity Dish" magazines will prepare a kosher feast in our own kitchen. Tickets for this Black Tie Optional event are $125 per person. The evening is chaired by Judie Lewis, Jo Laurens and Steven Doctors. Congress-woman Shelley Berkley plans to attend and District Court Judge Michael Cherry has also made a reservation. Several dignitaries have sent in good wishes that are featured in the Gala Adbook that will be distributed that evening. Chairperson Maria Hollander-Polott and her committee are very pleased with the booklet and look forward to sharing their Adbook with the congregation. The Sunday morning minyon will begin at 9:30 a.m. as usual and immediately following the minyon Hebrew school students will assemble so that we can hang mezuzzot on the school wing. Several congregants have become GATEKEEPERS with their contribution of $180 for 2 mezuzzot. We have more than 40 doors that require a mezuzzah and kosher parchment and we will continue to hang them until all are dedicated. For more information contact Maria at 454-4848 or write to her at Midbarkodesh@juno.com. A SHARED THOUGHT After 36 years together Marcy and I often reflect or echo each other's thoughts. I have asked her to share this one with you.... As the sweetness of the Pesach wine contrasts with the bitterness of the herb and the salty tears of the waters, so was the 8th day of Passover for us, as the family gathered at synagogue to recite kaddish for my mother, Pearl Horowitz and my granddaughter Jessica Ann Doctors and to name our beautiful new baby, Elizabeth Pearl. For us the Passover season has been synonomous with waiting to see what would happen. Three years ago we waited as my mother was admitted to Hospice and we mourned her passing before the week was over. Two years ago, we waited for Tay-Sachs to take our Jessica. She did make it through the seder week. Anally giving into the disease in May, 1998 when she was just 19 months old. Last year we waited for Tiffany and Steven to be accepted as candidates for the special pre-testing invitro implant program at the Jones Institute where they conceived Elizabeth last August. And this year, renewed in spirit, we barely made it through our seders, to deliver this beautiful angel who is truly a miracle. With Elizabeth's birth we are reminded daily that Tay-Sachs is a real disease that affects a portion of our population. Though we now know that the test results that our family had in 1971 were accurate to the best possible medical knowledge of the time, THEY WERE WRONG, and we unknow-ingly passed the Tay-Sachs gene to our daughter Tiffany, who, with Steven, passed the disease to their Jessica. We continue to share this story with you so that the future generations are protected. We ask that every couple have their own tests made before conception, not only for Tay-Sachs but for all known Jewish genetic diseases. We ask that those who have intermarried, who have adopted children, who are Jews by Choice, are Sephardic Jews or Jews with other backgrounds, not ignore that ONE PARENT may pass down the gene and that it might show up in the next generation. To illustrate to you exactly how important this testing is, I have asked Tiffany and Steven's permission to share with you the fact that Elizabeth is the only survivor of 11 pre-tested embryos, 2 of which could not be used because they would have matured to be born with the Tay-Sachs disease. Of the remaining 9, only 4 were suitable for implantation, and each of those 4 carried a positive gene. That does mean that Elizabeth is a carrier and that she will need to enter into genetic couseling when she reaches her child bearing years. Our Elizabeth, who will grow strong and healthy and be a pride to Midbar, as all of our children are, will be a daily reminder to have all of the children tested when they come of age, and to be thankful for all that we hold dear. This year our Passover was a renewal and we take that with us into spring and to the months and years ahead. ? E-MAIL ? Our classrooms are wonderfully spacious and bright Our Passover Model Seder was held in our classrooms and was enjoyed by all. Thanks to all the parents who helped us prepare. I know that our school will flourish along with our congregation. As our way of saying thank you, please read below and help us complete our mitzvah. MITZVAH OF THE MONTH After our ancestors left Egypt, it took fifty days to reach Mount Sinai, where they received the Torah from G-d. Beginning with the second evening of Passover we count from one to fifty to show our joy at receiving G-d's gift to the Children of Israel. To keep track of the days, our ancestors brought a measure of grain to be given to G-d in gratitude, a gift of appreciation. They used the sheaves of barley as they ripened during the early spring. On Shavuot, they would bring loaves of bread made from the first wheat In an effort to re-create the experience of our ancestors who brought a measure of grain to the altar each day of the "Omer" period, I propose that each of us be responsible for bringing their own measure of grain to the synagogue. If every religious school student brings a box of cereal when they come to Hebrew school through the holiday ofShavuot after the holiday is completed, we can donate the cereal boxes to the Jewish Family Services Food bank. Please help us fulfill our May mitzvah by bringing a box of cereal when you come to the synagogue. PRE-REGISTRATION It is time to pre-register for the 2000-2001 school year. Please fill in your application as soon as possible and send it to the office along with your deposit All fees for the 1999-2000 school year must be paid by May 21. The weekend immediately following, Midbar Kodesh Temple sent 11 USYers to the Congregation B'nai Israel Kinnus in Tustin, CA. The theme of the weekend was "Jews in a Sports World." Throughout the weekend, USYers participated in discussions on sports as the new religion of the world, a live interview with the father of LA Dodger Shawn Green, a night at a local amusement park, a dance, an opportunity to dunk the regional cabinet and Kinnus chairs, and of course tremendous ruach. On the 13th of April, MKT USY held their second annual "Chocolate Seder" and celebrated Michael Stein's birthday. Rounding out the month was a parent/USYer picnic at Discovery Park. This month, USY partici-pated in the city-wide Yom HaShoah event on the 2nd. USYers will be attending the Craig Taubman conceit at the Hebrew Academy on the 7th. (Seating is limited, so let us know right away if you want to go!! If you can drive others to the concert, that would be great! Call the Temple.) Elections are also coming up fast. They will be held on May 11. If you plan on running for chapter board next year, make sure to get an application from Marci Riceberg. She will also have a list of requirements for each position. If you have any questions about a po-sition, just ask either Marci or a board member at the next event. Otherwise, you can give Aimee Brookhart a call at 547-3695. Our final banquet will be held on the night of Thursday, May 18th. Final banquet will include dessert, board inductions & discharge, awards, gifts, and good-bye speeches. We ask that you please dress appropriately, as we expect this to be a very nice evening. The last event of the year is Far West's 47th Annual Regional Convention. This year, Eric Weiss, Bryan Steinkohl, Brad Simon, Charlene Naft, Farrah Kaye, and Aimee Brookhart will have the opportunity to spend four days at the Century Plaza Hotel in Los Angeles, CA. Farrah Kaye and Aimee Brookhart will have a special opportunity to spend a special senior day in Catalina before the convention begins. That's all for now! As a mother's helper at the age of nine, Marci started caring for a family of five children everyday after school. As a product of the Hebrew Academy and Midbar Kodesh, Marci's love for Judaism has been a strong influence on Jewish youth for Kadima and United Synagogue Youth. Her trip to Israel and Poland has also brought many experiences for her to share with USY. Marci has spent her summers at Camp Alonim in Brandeis, California, learning new songs, dances, and Jewish culture that has become an integral part of her life. For the past three summers, Camp Alonim has hired Marci as Head Counselor. According to Arthur Pinchev, Director of Camp Alonim, Marci is a compassionate self-starter, a team player, and has the organizational skills necessary to keep two hundred kids occupied and safe at the same time. Michael is looking forward to conducting the service at Midbar Kodesh on Friday night, May 19,2000. Michael will also deliver an original prayer. Mazel Tov to Michael! Over 600 people visited Midbar Kodesh Temple on Tuesday evening May 2, to commemorate the Holocaust. Cantor Bob and Midbar Chairperson Deborah Cohen did an outstanding job of coordinating the project that was over a year in the planning. Dozens of Midbar members set up and served as hosts during hte evening. The program received outstanding compliments.."the best ever" could be overheard in the hallways and gardens. Guests brought canned good for the JFSA foodbank and walked through an art exhibit displayed by the Holocaust Library. Many took the time to light yahartzeit candles laid out on tables in Jessica's Garden. Survivors lead the ma'ariv service which was followed by guest speaker Karl Schnibbe, a Mormon who was arrested by the Gestapo for distributing anti-Hitler leaflets. Mr. Schnibbe gave first hand accounts of the interrogations he endured, his time in a concentration camp, and four years in Siberia after being captured by the Russians. Community Rabbis and Cantors were in attendance and participated in the service. Following the program guest shared refreshments and conversation in the Garden. Well, in my opinion it's quite difficult if you are trying to do it alone. When I was in college in Peoria, Illinois, one of only a handful of Jewish students, where there was only one congregation in town and nowhere to get matzah for miles, it was extremely difficult to maintain my observance. However, here we are in Henderson, Nevada with a new building, a growing congregation, and grocery stores that carry kosher food on a daily basis (not to mention matzah all year round). What are we waiting for? The wait is over! We have a Jewish community to be a part of. The almost 100 people who come for Shabbat evening services is not something to hear about, but to experience. But don't stop there. What happens after services is just as important as the service itself. People who during the week don't have the opportunity to talk to one another, spend 30 minutes or more catching up on what's gone on. Sometimes they go back to each other's homes, but often times they never leave the parking lot. This is what I look forward to all week. Praying in a room full of Jewish people who enjoying being together, and then having the chance to catch up with friends after the service. I invite you to join the Midbar Kodesh community and join us for an exhilarating experience called Shabbat.
