To say that the first are Rudy Cardenas, a fantas- night showing was somewhat tic juggler; Galla Shown who overlong implies that it might thrills, and sometimes chills, have been boring. Such is not with her daring trapeze act; the case, but the show as programmed Thursday was a half :hour longer than the usual standard showroom production and it will no doubt be shortened to conform to the standard. Costumes are fabulous, in keeping with our Las Vegas reputation, but yet done in such exquisite taste, even with glitter and plumes they are never gaudy. According to advance publicity released by the hotel, some 950 yards of chiffon and 500 yards of feather boa were used to make the pink gowns for the "Tribute to Fred Astaire" number. All in all "Pzazz '68" has 350 costumes for its cast of 70 dancers, singers and showgirls, ranging from a mini-burlap dress the Agostinos with their acrobatic dancing and feats of strength, and a fresh young stand-up comedian, Jeremy Vernon, whose addition to the cast was so new his name wasn't on the program. From the opening act, Hollywood High C amp (Hollywood) revisited with the focus around three women famous in their time - Mae West, Carmen Miaranda and Julie Andrews), through the Tribute to Fred Astair, Boomtown Today, To Bing, Bob and Dorothy 'With ' Love', Salute to Beau Geste and the final reprise, the show has pzazz ?╟÷ which is only natural, it is Pzazz ?╟÷ Pzazz '68." Showtimes nightly are 8:15 p.m. and midnight. It's a good thing to make reservations early, when the word gets around, there may be a waiting list. Hollywood, Calif. Reporter (Circ. D. 11,000) 2 1967 /L?3 JILn 6 *?√ß*?√ß*?√ß Est-18 * LAS VEGAS ?╟≤ By JOY HAMANN Las Vegas.?╟÷Abe Schiller and the Flamingo Hotel got a "quickie" divorce last Thursday in a surprise ending to a marriage that lasted 21 years?╟÷a record in any guy's book. "Mr. Las Vegas" said he has no immediate plans other than to complete two fishing films (pro moting LV, of course!) at Lake Mead. The cowboy-garbed good-will ambassador refused to discuss details, proving again he is a gentleman . . . Estelle McCray packed up her portable and moved across the street from the top PR post at the Frontier to the assistant's slot with the Desert Inn's Maximilian Wolkoff, "Max" for short. No, he is NOT married to a gal named Carlotta, but he IS doing a bang-up job for the Dl. The handsome flack from the Eden Roc was a delight as a host at the posh "Pzazz, '68!" opening and cast party, too . . . On "Pzazz" ?╟÷Dotty Lamour led the applause and laughter at the segment dedicated to Bing, Bob and Dotty. She has been doing several of her "Hello, Dolly!" Riviera performances with a temp of 101 . . . Robert Taylor, looking better than when we worked together on a little epic called "Westward the Women" a few months back (THAT is called "editorial license"), was up for the Dl opening with his Ursula, who is as beautiful as any of the showgals. Aladdin prexy Milton Prell, at this writing, still in serious condition from a stroke. Prell suffered a coronary a few years ago that had him cooling it for some time. A very well-liked and respected man in our biz . . . Patti Page introduced two very tasty ballads at her Fremont Hotel opening. The tunes were written by His Royal Highness, King Adulyadej (the proofreader will go out of his gourd with THAT one) of Thailand . . . Sorry to hear Dennis O'Keefe has been transferred to a Southern California hospital for further exams and tests. We shared some giggles when we were both in Sunrise Hospital here. "That Certain Girl" at the Thunderbird will miss his highly professional services. Hurry back, Denny . . . Sorry, but I just don't like Bobby Darin's new hair style. Dig his act at the Flamingo, but lose the hair style, baby. Speaking of the Darin show?╟÷rotund femme comic Lillian Mallek opened and closed in one. Management claimed "lengthy show" for buying up the Broadway performer's contract. Hank Henry and Sparky Kaye led the hilarity at the beautiful party Judy Bayley tossed at her Hacienda Hotel to honor new Dist. Judge Al Wartman. The guest list looked like the blue book of Nevada, with Sen. Alan Bible leading the parade of notables includ- ing Nevada Gaming Commission Chairman George Dickerson, ex-Lt. Gov. Cliff Jones, District Judges John Men- doza and Howard Babcock (he is pondering the Henderson bare bosom battle), State Sen. B. Mahlon Brown, etc. . . ."The Jet Set" was honored at Nellis AFB recently for the group's 14- | week tour of the Vietnam war zones. What makes THAT so unusual is that || the four kids range in age from eight I to 18, sing and play up a storm, and;,, are polite. Don't tell me the younger generation is all going to pot! . . . Harvey Diederich's promotion from PR to director of marketing at the Tropi- cana couldn't happen to a greater guy. He is one of the most capable, well- liked and nicest fellers about. And welcome back to Brig Townsend, most recently of Autry's LA hotel, who will take over the PR gig . . . Word is out that a lot of folks at the Frontier "want out, but fast" and NOT because Howard H. is the new landlord ... I Speaking of HH, did he buy the Stardust, too? The list grows longer daily, ! and he is a most welcome addition to the city. So he wants to make like Garbo?╟÷man, he's entitled in my book. George Jessel's current best gal, > Sheila Wager, heads up to Lake Tahoe to catch him at Harrah's South Shore I Room next weekend. Also up at the I lake, but at Harvey's Resort, is that Polynesian doll, Evalani, who gave the:! local Showboat Hotel biz a vitamin i shot with her torrid island review for U so many weeks. Bud Dant, Decca brain, up from LA |f to supervise a new Dukes of Dixieland ; album to be done either live at the j Trop Blue Room or at United Recording here. The boys are filling the room nightly and sound oh, so good to these often bored ears . . . Guess Billy Eck-;: stine changed his mind about "retirement," I am happy to say. He opens at the Aladdin Friday with the funny Herkie Styles ... A swinging group, Phase III (not one hundred eleven,'" but three) in the Merri-MiaL,X???╜nge i of the Mint Hotel downtown . . . Dennis Ritz, who has a very good interview show on the new KHBV-TV, is co-: producing a show slated for opening \n. about three weeks at a Strip hotel. A talented youngster, he obviously hadj good training at home because he hasU,; natural good manners when he inter-j views a guest . . . Get Bill Campbell, the great designer of the "Pzazz" wardrobe, to tell you about what happened when he completed the remod- eling of his Laurel Canyon home's, master bath. TOO much . . . Mamie Van Doren, who has as many curves to pitch as her husband, opens tonight at the Bonanza. The next night, Candy Barr will satisfy the fellows' sweet I tooth when she makes her Vegas return in the same spa's lounge. Sorry to learn Henry "Hot Lips" Levine and band got the ax at the Frontier just when all the good shows are slated to start. Oh well, that's show biz?╟÷or something.
