We decided a title of our Lecture Male/Female Relationships from a Historical Perspective.
Proposed Speaker: Terry McMillan
When: February 1994, during Black History Month
Forum: Open to all people
Spoke w/Terry McMillan's agent, Alan Walker stated her fee is $10,000, one night's lodging, food, and transportation.
We need to solicit the City, County, Library, UNLV to see if they would co-sponsor the event. Grant deadline is October 12, 1993. We need to raise 15% of monetary grant. We will report community support findings at next meeting. If not good community support, we will bring someone in that charges a lesser fee, Bebe Campbell Moore or Johnetta Cole. We will contact publisher to see when she has a book tour. Next Meeting July 6, 193 6:00 Lavonnne's House.
Humanties Meeting July 6, 1993 Attendance:

Seems to be positive support from the community. County will contribute $1/000, City will contribute in-kind contribution $1,000-Publicity, Library $1500, WLV facility, books from jogger and proceeds donated back to WLV in name of AKA. UNLV, English Chair was not sure possible donation of $1500 and 300 comp tickets. We will seek out other avenues Women’s Studies, Women's Center, UNLV Provost, etc.
Committee decided to go forward with the event. Stated it will cost about $15,000 to put on this event. We will contact Mr. Joe Finkhouse, Asst Dir Nevada Humanities Committee for suggestions. Will draft a letter to publisher as well as agent to see if author’s costs will go down for a non-profit organization. Agent sent literature on author as well as a program book for other authors. We decide to abandon title will not fit in with author's views. Will discuss possible titles with Mr. Finkhouse at a later date.

Director of Nevada Humanities Committee at Lavonne Lewis' House. Mr. Finkhouse supports our proposed lecture. He gave us some good suggestions. Stated that we need to get a date. We need to ask lecturer if she would do a reading excerpt at West Las Vegas Library and also a lecture at Artemus Ham Hall. The booksigning is okay, however this not considered a Humanities project. Although, this could be involved. He stated that we are allowed to charge for the event. This would be part of our inkind contributions. He stated that it is recommended we write our grant by September 12, 1993. The deadline for the grant is October 12, 1994. He stated that he would help us write the grant. We stated will keep in touch and follow-up at a later day.

Lavonne Lewis took Ellen Rose, Women’s Studies UNLV and I out to lunch on 8/10/93 to Marie Callendar's to discuss support/ co-sponsorship of Terry McMillan lecture. Prior to that Lavonne spoke w/John Unrue, Provost, UNLV. He granted $1,000 in the name of Women’s Studies at UNLV. Women's Studies offered an inkind contribution of secretarial support.
Spoke with Alan Walker, Agent for Terry Millan, after sending and faxing a letter to him. He asked questions about her fee. He said that we needed to offer - a fee. However, speaker may or may not accept offer. I asked that agent attach an addendum to letter offering $10,000 as a fee- booksigning, reception, reading excerpt(brief) and lecture-Artemus Ham Hall. We also gave an additional date of April 9, 1994. Agent stated will get back w/me at the end of the week. On 8/17/93, I spoke with the agent. Agent asked if he could have an additional date, I said was not sure but it would depend on the availability of the facility possibly May or June or thereafter.
He stated that he did not have answer as of yet. Stated 1st presented to Terry McMillan- she said "no." She did not want to do anymore speaking engagements. Said presented to her again and she stated "maybe will do more speaking engagements." But no confirmation. Agent stated that it looked hopeful. He would try and have an answer by Thursday or Friday of this week.
I told him that I understand, however, we have people that I need to answer to give answers. We were to begin writing the grant this evening. Spoke w/ Committee Members and it was stated that we need a back-up. Suggestions were Toni Morrison, Bebe Moore Campbell, Gloria Naylor, Alice Walker. We stated will give agent until August 31, 1993. If no answer by then, we will proceed to contact another lecturer and inform co-sponsors of the change. If there is a change, we do not anticipate as much support as we had hoped. Spoke w/Peggy Trasatti/Library. She stated will inform Marie Jordan of the tentative dates. We will deal with her in the future. She will send a confirmation letter this week of WLV, $1500.00, publicity, purchase of books through jogger and donate proceeds back to Library in the name of AKA.
Spoke with Joanne Nivenson with the county gave us an in-kind contribution of $500.00-publicity ARTCUE begins Jan-Feb. She gave a contact to receive confirmation letter.
Spoke w/Dr. Joe McCullough/Chair-English Department. Stated no funds. That we had already asked John Unrue. Lavonne Lewis
stated will call Mary Ruth Carlton/Women's Center, UNLV for possible co-sponsorship.

Agent has been called 4 times. He had not returned phone calls. Agent did not respond by deadline. Spoke with Committee. It was agreed to start looking at another speaker-Toni Morrison, Bebe Moore Campbell. We can only assume Terry McMillan is not interested. We have a deadline to meet for the grant and we are slowly running out of time. It was agreed to begin writing grant anyway. Ellen Rose of Women's Studies at UNLV has contacted me twice. States at the University of Arizona through e mail it was stated that no faculty member new or had ever ^oMillan. She was elusive. She no longer has ties with the University and that they were unable to give out any information aobut her. A telephone number nor an address. She mentioned that this was not positive. She also contacted the University of Kentucky and they were not familiar with any proported visit. Suggested that we line-up another speaker she new that Toni Morrison was at Princeton University.
It was decided that I would contact Toni Morrison through her publisher or through Princeton University. I would call Ellen Rose tomorrow to inquire about her Princeton contacts.
On September 3, 1993. I received a call from Terry McMillan's agent. He stated that she said yes. But that she preferred April 9, 1994. The problem now is a place. Artemus Ham Hall n?nnxVailable anymore. The only date available is April
Ham Rai fT J explained the non-availability of Artemus
Ham Hall. He asked for another date in April, which I could n°LgiVe:^SJated wil1 sPeak w/ committee tonight. He stated author will be in Australia for 2 weeks promoting book. However, personal assistant might be able to look in personal calendar away to see if any other date in April is available.
Stated agreed to both dates, however preferred April 9, 1994 dateated W111 Cal1 him after Labor DaY to let him know of a
