    Academic Dress
The history of academic dress reaches far back into the early days of the oldest AWersitles. It appears that academic clothing wasfirWWtroduced and worn at Cambridge and Oxford thefeffleonth
    century.
The European custom was carried to America with the establishment of our own colleges and universities. In 1895 an academic code of dress was adopted, and the standards were accepted by most of the colleges and universities the United States. Today, the black robe, hood, and cap are generally worn.
Biree different types of black gowns Way be distinguished in the academic procession. The bachelors' gowns have long pointed sleeves; the pasters' gowns have oblong sleeves with an arc cut away in the front. The doctors' gowns are faced with velvet andMave bell-shaped sleeves witWhree bars of velvet.
The Oxford cap, the so-called mortarboardM black and has a long tassel fastened tome middle of the top that raworn pendant over the left front of the cap. The hood, draped from the shoulder, denotes, by its length and colors, the degree and the institution which conferred the degree.
Sfe blue and gold cord worn in today's ceremony designates membership in Beta Gamma Sigma, the national business honorary.
scarlet and silver cord worn in today's ceremony designates memberships Sigma lota Epsilon, the honorary and professional fraternity.
***The fijedfflion worn in today's ceremony designates membership in Phi Kappa Phi, the honor
    society.
