JOSEPH & GRAND ISLAND RAILWAY COMPANY o m a h a , n e b ., April 14, 1925. SUBJECT: Budget Item 98 - ff.O. 4707. Mr. I'. H. Knickerbocker, Gen. Mgr., LA&SL RR Co., Los Angeles C alif. Dear S ir: Referring to your le tte rs of March 18th and 30th with estimate of work to be done under Budget Item 98, on Las Vegas water supply: The estimate shown here is considerably in excess of the budget item owing to operating expense work amounting to $11,995. The settling basin with f i l t e r fo r water softener, amounting to $3330 was recommended by me and your plans and estimates are en tirely in accord with my idea fo r th is work. Under costs of new parts to.replace parts retired, you have a store expense of $1493. I believe this is excessive as th is material would be ordered direct and delivered to the job and it is my understanding that 1% is allowed to the store on this kind of material. It is my understanding that the estimate which you have submitted covers replacement of old pipe line that was called fo r under Budget Item 228, approved September 18, 1923 and which was not completed. I f this is true, a ll of the work shown in the drawings meets with my approval and has my recommendation. I do not quite understand why some of this work should be carried over into the new budget item inasmuch as the work had been previously approved and work order issued. I may not be quite clear on th is but in any case I would recommend the replacement of the old V.C. pipe by wood stave pipe on account of the d iffic u lt ie s experienced in the past with th is pipe and would also recommend the 24" wood stave pipe called for at the upper end of the lin e , in order to reduce losses in pressure due to fric tio n . Mr. Calvin may wish to submit the work order to me fo r approval a fte r it has been submitted. Yours truly,
