Bill Ireland
Athletic Director
University of Nevada, Las Vegas
Completing his fourth year as the Director of Intercollegiate
Athletics for UNLV, Bill Ireland's progressive planning
and aggressive work has brought tremendous national
prominence to not only the Rebel athletic teams, but also the
entire university community.
Ireland, a native Nevadan, started the UNLV football
program in 1968 and coached the first five Rebel gridiron
squads before moving up to his current position.
His continued ingenuity and foresight will help keep
UNLV's athletic program on a continued spiral to the top.

"INDICATES TIED RECORD
LAS VEGAS, NEV.—Based significantly on
the great output against the University of
Nevada, Reno, the playoff-bound UNLV Rebel
football team has finished the 1976 regular
season with a fine 9-2 record and 40 new team
and individual school records to their credit.
Coach Tony Knap's first-year at UNLV also
produced four ties of existing records, giving the
1976 Rebel team the most productivity of any in
the nine-year history of the sport at the school.
Senior All-America quarterback candidate
Glenn Carano led the individual assault on the
record books as he complied 21 new Rebel
marks and tied two existing standards. Among
the marks the 6-3, 197 pound signal caller established
are in total offense for MOST
PLAYS—Game (52), Season (367) and Career
(913), MOST YARDS GAINED—Game (351), and
Career (5,234), MOST YARDS GAINED PER
GAME—Season (202.0) and Career (163.6).

Junior running back Raymond Strong also
broke two records held by former UNLV All-
America runningback Mike Thomas. Strong has
marks for HIGHEST GAIN PER RUSH—Game
(20.4) and Season (7.3 yards per carry). Strong
gained 907 net yards for the regular season.
Senior wide receiver Mike Haverty also set
three receiving marks for UNLV —MOST
PASSES CAUGHT—Game (10), and Season
(51), and MOST CATCHES PER GAME—Season
(4.5).
Senior free safety Marlon Beavers kept his
name in the record annals as he set marks for

KICKOFF RETURNS—Career (1,452) and
H I G H E S T A V E R A G E P E R K I C K O F F

Vereen still has two years to add on to his marks
too.
While Vereen was Division It's leading kickoff
return man this season, freshman Ken Bowles
set a Rebel record with a 99-yard kickoff return
against Cal Poly.
Junior walk-on placekicker Sonny LeJeune
set the other individual Rebel record as he has
now made 39 consecutive extra point kicks going
into the 1977 season.
In college football, post season competition
does not count in season statistics, so the final
Rebel stats for the 1976 season will not change.
Among the team records set by UNLV were
seven all totaled. This year's Rebels averaged
405 yards per game in total offense, a new mark,
as were the passing marks of MOST YARDS
GAINED PER GAME (250.5), MOST PASSES
ATTEMPTED PER GAME (34), and MOST
PASSES COMPLETED PER GAME (17.7).

Wrestling Season Ends
The UNLV wrestlers ended the 1976-77 season with a
19-2 dual meet record which included a ten match winning
streak and three key victories over major opponents
(UCLA, Utah State and Stanford). The Rebels decisioned
UCLA by a score of 22-12 in January, then the Bruins lost
to fourth ranked U. of Oklahoma by the same tally. Utah
State suffered its first loss in 14 duals at the hands of
UNLV 27-16 and then came back to beat nearly all the
teams in the WAC conference.
In their first season of competition, the Rebel wrestlers
outscored their dual meet opponents 732 to 184, with a
match average of 35 points and 8.7 for the opponents.
Several marks set this season could stand for many

RUNNIN' REBELS: CHAMPIONS OF THE WEST
LAS VEGAS, NEV.—It happens every year. The season
ends, but never before in the history of UNLV basketball
has the season ended more dramatically, more excitingly,
or more emotionally. This just wasn't the end of another
basketball season for the winningest active major college
coach in America—Jerry Tarkanian. Rather, it was the
culmination of THE season in Runnin' Rebel basketball
and the final performance for five talented UNLV seniors.
UNLV's record-setting team climaxed it's greatest
season ever with a 29-3 record and a third-place finish in
the NCAA Championships at the Omni in Atlanta, Georgia.
The Runnin' Rebels, who now have an NCAA three-year
playoff record 7-3, won the Western Regional championship
and during the course of the season set six
NCAA records, tied three more and also broke 19 school
records while tying an additional four.
Coach Jerry Tarkanian upped his nine-year major
college coaching record to 224-36 for a brilliant .862 winning
percentage. In four years at UNLV, his teams have
compiled a 102-16 record for an even more impressive
.864 winning percentage. While marching through the
season with only three losses, winning the championships
of the Rebel Roundup, Las Vegas Holiday Classic and the
NCAA Western Regionals, the Runnin' Rebels clearly
etched themselves in the annals of basketball history.
No team in history holds more NCAA scoring records
(14), and no team may ever equal some of the feats of the
Runnin' Rebels. Besides winning 59 consecutive games in
the Las Vegas Convention Center, UNLV's five seniors
have eternally placed themselves in the hearts of all Las
Vegas.
Senior All-America Eddie Owens, who led the Rebels in
scoring once again with a 21.8 per game average, led the
assault on the record books as he set five individual
marks this season. Owens became the all-time leading
scorer in UNLV history this season with 2,221 points and
also set marks for the most field goals made in a career
(913), most games played (118) and most consecutive
games played (118) and most consecutive free throws
made in a single game (15).
Senior captain Robert Smith, the little general with a big
heart, set five records also as he led the nation in free
throw percentage (.925 with 98 of 106 made). Robert also
set standards for best free throw percentage in a career at
.878 (216 of 246), most assists in a career (444) and in a
season (195), and most consecutive free throws made in
one season (27).
Senior Glen Gondrezick grabbed the most rebounds in
a career (831) and Sudden Sam Smith made the most
steals in acareer(H3in two years). While Owens is the top
scorer in UNLV history with 2,221 points, Gondrezick is
5th (1,311). Lewis Brown is 6th (1,289). Robert Smith is
10th (954) and Sam Smith is 11th (943). After just two
seasons, talented sophomore Reggie Theus is no. 23 in
all-time scoring (648).
The unsung hero of the legendary Rebels was 6-9
center Larry Moffett who was Mr. Defense for UNLV while
scoring 8.0 and getting 9.2 rebounds per game as a junior.

UNLV Lady Rebel Debra Waddy (no. 25)

(no. 22). UNLV defeated the University of
Nebraska 96-72.
LAS VEGAS, NEV.—With a 23-game winning streak at home and several new school records to
their credit, the UNLV Lady Rebels ended the 1976-77 regular season with an easy victory over
Arizona State 88-57 last weekend in Tempe.
Belinda Candler led the Rebel effort in Arizona with 20 points and 13 rebounds; also in double
scoring figures were Debra Waddy with 18 and Cindy Perkins and Diane Tillman with 10.
Under second year Head Coach Dan Ayala, the women compiled a 14-4 record, giving him a
total of 41-9 in the women's program. The Lady Rebels now have a 23-game winning streak at
home which started in 1974 with a 70-45 win over Palomar College in the last home game of that
season and continued through 14 home victories in 1975-76 and eight home triumphs in 1976-77.
One of the key factors in those successful seasons has been Debra Waddy, the 5-10 senior
from Angleton, Texas who has led the team in scoring during her two years at UNLV and is the
first woman to score more than 1,000 points in her career at UNLV. Waddy amassed 1,105 points
in just two years, a feat unequalled by the eight men who have earned the same honor with the
runnin' Rebels. Playing in 49 games, Waddy averaged 23 points per game and 8 rebounds,
averaging 48.6 percent from the floor and 69.5 from the charity stripe.
Also graduating is Janice Fuller, a 6-1 center, who led the squad with 13.9 rebounds last
season, then was forced to leave this year after topping the rebound totals for the first ten games.
She ends her career with a 12.5 rebounding average and 11.7 average in scoring.
This year's co-captains, Donna Wick and Liz Galloway, are also after starting for two consecutive
season for the Lady Rebels. Galloway averaged 10.6 ppg and 8.1 rebounds, while Wick
had a 8.7 ppg average and 6.7 boards per game.
The 1976-77 squad broke most of the school records set last season, despite the fact that they
played a much shorter schedule. The overall team field goal percentage of 42.5 topped last year's
mark, in addition to making the best free throw percentage of 63.1. Individually, Waddy's 78.8 free
throw percentage will go down in the record books, as well as Belinda Candler's 55.2 field goal
percentage.
The Lady Rebs end the regular season as one of the highest scoring teams in the nation,
averaging 91.2 ppg and allowing their opponents only 65.3, making more than 100 points in five
games.
Three women were in double scoring figures for the season, Waddy with 18.8 ppg, Candler
close behind with 18.4 and Diane Tillman with 10.3. Candler clearly dominated the rebounding
totals with 9.2 board per game.
UNLV is hoping for possible tournament offers, including a repeat performance at the National
Women's Invitational in Amarillo, Texas on March 17-19. The Lady Rebels placed third in last
year's tournament. Also in the wings is the selection of teams to participate in the AIAW regionals
to be held in Fullerton, Cal. March 10-12.

THE WORLD OUNDTJS
THE WORLD 'AROUND US
By 1974 the United States was making moves
to adjust to a milieu of seeming crises. The
Alaskan pipeline was approved, Kissinger's negotiations
in the Middle East finally resulted in an accord
while the Republican Administration was increasingly
under fire in the Watergate investigations. Americans
were horrified at the kidnapping of Patty
Hearst and amazed at the resignation of Nixon's
top
aides, and also intrigued by Mariner 10's
fly-by of Mercury, Hank Aaron's 715th home
run, and Russia's deporting of Solzhenitsyn.
In July, the American political crisis came to
a head with the subpoening of Nixon's tapes
his resignation in August, and
Ford's pardon in September.
Finally, Ford approved |
vate ownership of gold
and the Oil Embargo
was lifted.
