It seems like it was only a few weeks ago when we were waiting for our moving truck to a r r i v e from New York. Yet, so much has been accomplished over these past six months that sometimes I have to step back, take a deep breath, and digest our progress. The most obvious accomplishment is the growth of our congregation. We have gained nearly seventy new f a m i l i e s since July, and we continue to welcome new members into our c o n g r e g a t i o n each week. On February 4th, following our annual meeting, we will celebrate breaking the 250 member mark for the f i r s t time at our "B" party. I look forward to celebrating with you. As our membership continues to grow, the c r e a t i v i t y of our programming must expand as well so that we can offer a v a r i e t y of programs for the diverse interests of our members. Please let us know how we can best meet your needs. For the younger f a m i l i e s in the congregation, we have now established a F a m i l y Shabbat s e r v i c e that meets the 3rd Friday night of each month. We have added a Shabbat Can, which meets on the first Saturday of each month, for parents and their young children. Also, we have arranged for a series of f a m i l y holiday educational sessions that will suggest creative ways to bring the Jewish holidays into our homes. Your attendance is the only way we can measure whether these programs are worthwhile, so if you are interested, we hope that you will take advantage of what we are offering. In October, our weekday minyan was expanded to Monday and Thursday mornings. The minyan has been a tremendous success thanks to the efforts of Herb Zola and our minyanaires. Perhaps for the f i r s t time in h i s t o r y of Las Vegas, we have established a C o n s e r v a t i v e Hevra Kadisha (Jewish burial society). This project, with which we have j o i n e d hands with Temple Beth Sholom, has received a phenomenal response of dedicated people who are eager and willing to f u l f i l l this most beautiful and compassionate mitzvah. Our Religious School had grown both in q u a n t i t y and quality. Our students have improved their Hebrew reading and Judaic knowledge with the help of our dedicated teachers and director, Mira Slobody. The "Ask the Rabbi" box in each classroom has been an exciting way for me to get to know the students and for the students to get to know me. We have also begun a Religious School Choir that made their debut at Borders Books and continued on page 7 I n t r o d u c t i o n to J u d a i s m Starting this month. See page 5 for details. Please call the synagogue office for more information. J A N U A R Y 2 0 0 1 D i ? ^ (ZX i ^ X C O t i o n 15 you TEACH, you if UN. ? This month also begins the "tsinnus Season". We are sending 8 USY'ers t o Beth El Synagogue in Phoenix, Arizona on January 12th - 14th. We cannot wait. Kadima and Katan have some fun ahead too. To celebrate this milestone, Midbar Kodesh Temple will host a "B" party immediately following the February 4th congregational meeting. Meital Wiederhorn has been selected as the official mascot and will wear a Buzzy Bee costume. She invites other Midbar children to do the same. BBQ luncheon will be available, keeping in the *B" theme, with burgers, buns, beverage and brownies. More info as we get closer to the February 4th date, but mark your calendars to buzz on by at Midbar's "B" party! It will be a Dr. Seuss kind of day! Could we have known then that we would have the p r i v i l e g e of calling him Rabbi? " Youth Director Rina Roselinsky knows it; her mother Wendy serves as Youth Commissioner, and knows it too. Putting children on p l a n e s . . . i s it really as simple as that? Yes and No. Most of our board of directors are made up of former youth group o f f i c e r s , advisors, and d i recto r s . . . m o s t belonged to a USY or other youth group when they w e r e growing up...Each will tell you that the experience played a major role in their personal, spiritual and r e l i g i o u s development. Each will also say that it was not enough. That quality religious school classroom education is e q u a l l y important. That the B'nai Mitzvah training is very significant and that more than any of these experiences, is the opportunity to continue to learn so that we do not only take our 13 year old religious experiences and mentality with us when we enter adulthood. A strong youth commission working in tandem with a strong Religious School and Adult education committee will ensure this personal growth and o f f e r our own children as leaders in the communities where they will eventually go to school and live. Be part of this adventure. I t is about planes and d u f f l e bags and f r i e n d s h i p s that last a lifetime. I t is about shared experiences. It is about developing leadership. Congregants and community members may participate in one or all of the classes. Rabbi Jeremy Wiederhorn will conduct the first class on Sunday, January 7th at 10:30 am. It will be an overview of kashrut for those who are just beginning, or a refresher for those who already keep kosher. He will talk about the reasons we choose to keep a kosher home; kashrut at life cycle functions; kashrut in and out of the home and will give some "how-to" tips. This class will be open to all who wish to attend and will be held at Midbar Kodesh Temple. There will be no charge for the class. No pre-registration is required. Ryan Sterling and Millie Silverstein, both Midbar Kodesh members and both very familiar with kashrut, will host the cooking demonstrations. Ryan is a trained professional chef and he will prepare a meat entree and share some of his secrets at 7:30 pm on Tuesday January 16th. Millie has done local caterering with her expertise in desserts. "I only use butter, so it will have to be something deliciously dairy," she said. Millie will hold her class, also at 7:30 pm on Tuesday, January 30th. The location of these 2 classes will be given out upon registration. The finale will be "Nothing To Whine About", a Kosher wine and cheese tasting to be held at Midbar Kodesh Temple on Saturday evening, February 3rd at 8:00 pm. Chairperson Steven Doctors, who co-chaired and emceed Midbar's May Gala, promises a special evening. The cost for the 3 sessions will total $4029. The synagogue's first cookbook, "Look What's Cooking At Midbar" may be purchased with the class for an additional jiioes. "Nothing To Whine About" will be open to the congregation and members of the community. Tickets for that single program will cost ?36.00 and will be available in January. The cookbook is now available in Midbar's gift shop for ?12.00 per copy. For more information call 454-4848 or stop by the synagogue at 1940 Paseo Verde Parkway to sign up for the classes. COMING SOON "Honey on the Page: a Taste of Jewish Learning."
