Miss Carroll uses no props or gimmicks, I noted when I caught her act at the Town and Country Club last season. She works up her material by just taking a good look at the comical aspects of everyday life. As a result, she has traded quips successfully on radio and television with Milton Berle, Joe E. Lewis, Jimmy Durante, Bob Hope, Jack Benny, et al. And that's fast company for any performer. The international comedy knockabout act known as the Three Romanos will make its New York cafe debut on the same bill with Miss Carroll. Likewise the Tuckers, tram- polinists, a European novelty act that has scored at the London Palladium and the Lido in Paris. New beauties have been added to the popular Latin Quarter chorus line. Meanwhile, the dozen other stars in "All About Dames" have been held over by managing director Eddie Risman. Music for dancing customers is supplied here by the bands of Jo Lombard! and Buddy Harlowe. INAUGURATING A NEW supper club policy, starting this evening, the well-known Weylin Bar will present Bobby Short, his piano and his songs four times nightly. Mayor Robert Wagner threatened it real tough. Has any thought been given by those elected iami Beach's City Hall about getting real tough relative to ame announced plans for Miami Beach? IF NOT, WHY NOT? Hoffa got the bluff on our town? You probably know that iy Hoffa called off the unionization plan in New York. On my I hear only critical statements of this proposal and severe ism of the Miami Beach councilman who accepted the post torney for Hoffa. This could be political suicide? WARREN Fran Warren, singer, and Al Bernie, comedian, are the new features at Jack Silverman's International Theatre Restaurant 'premiering tomorrow night. They head a show which also features the Boots McKenna chorus and One of the results of the showcasing by the Stardust, Las Vegas, of the elaborate spread from Le Lido, Paris, is the scanning of layouts from other foreign ports suitable for American cafes. A parallel development is being started in Rio de Janeiro, where Fred Kelly, a brother of actor dancer Gene, has gone down to produce a.show for the Night & Day, a major South American cafe. Show is "Merry Widow in Samba Time" which will open July 20 with a Brazilian cast. Kelly has been brought in to give it the angle that will make it attractive to the American trade there, plus the potential for audiences in the U. S. itself. Le Lido show at the Stardust was produced by Donn Arden, also an American. That layout has revived an interest in huge production. It's admitted, of course, that the Vegas import !.as a lot of nudity which cannot be exhibited in many cities. But it's felt that there is sufficient lushness which would make it adaptable for other cities. The prime target for the new Rio show will be Las Vegas, but from there it's hoped that it can be trouped elsewhere. For example, it's seen that with portable equipment, shows of that calibre can play Reno, Hollywood, and perhaps New York. Las Vegas spots are still seeking gimmicks. Vegas hotels which do not have a sufficiency of names are playing the angles, and it's conceivable that the Riviera, which has booked Broadway's "Li'l Abner," would be interested in an import. It's felt that one Parisian import at a time is sufficient, and hence they are concentrating on shows from other countries. General Artists Corp. is likely to be the selling agent for the Rio show, for which a pitch will be made soon after its opening. te Durso's orchestra.
