LEO WILHER DAY WHEREAS; the Congregation of Temple Beth Sholom will be holding a Testimonial Dinner on Sunday, January 29, 1984 at the Frontier Hotel in honor of the retirement of their Executive Director, Mr. Leo Wllner; and WHEREAS; this auspicious occasion will mark eighteen years of service to the Temple by Mr. Wllner who has also served 1n the capacity of cantor and sub?stitute Rabbi, conducting sabbath and holiday services; and WHEREAS; Mr. Wllner has devoted h1s life to h1s faith and 1n addition to being a charter member of the Las Vegas Combined Jewish Appeal, now known as the Jewish Federation of Las Vegas, has received many honors from the community such as the Israel 1te Newspaper's "Man of the Year" and was honored along with his entire family, wife, Mickey and sons, Robert and Martin, by the Jewish Family Service Agency. The marvel of Leo?s performance & fidelity has mystified countless observers and admirers. Some of them have found understanding easier when they encountered the woman behind him, Mickey Wilner. ? ? Lots of major cities have temples. Some of them have exceptional executive directors. Only our own Beth Sholom had the man who wrote the book, Leo Wilner.? STUART J. MASON DR. LOUIS M. LEDERMAN an odyssey of accomplishment LEO WILNER RETIRES AFTER 18 YEARS OF DIRECTING DESTINY OF TEMPLE The Las Vegas Jewish community joins with leaders from all levels of life in Southern Nevada to salute the retiring executive director of Temple Beth Sholom on January 29. ? A night with Mickey and Leo Wilner? will be held in the Americana Room of the Frontier Hotel on that Sunday night at 7 P.M.. The testimonial dinner will pay tribute to Wilner, who leaves the important post at the Temple after 18 years as its chief administrator. Dinner chairman, Herb Kaufman, is organizing the affair ? so that every possible Nevadan who has been touched by the deeds and personality of Leo Wilner has a chance to honor him as he retires to the quiet life with Mickey.? Wilner came to Las Vegas from Los Angeles where he served for 14 years as executive director of the former Judea Congregation. He assumed the same post at Temple Beth Sholom on January 1, 1966. Among his countless accomplishments is Wilner? s charter membership in the nucleus group that met and organized the Las Vegas Combined Jewish Appeal, known today as the Jewish Federation of Las Vegas. Rabbi Dr. Louis Lederman hails the achievements of Wilner as ? significant milestones in the development of Temple Beth Sholom as the spiritual stronghold it is today.? An active member of the Temple Men?s Club, Wilner is a charter member of the Nate Mack Lodge #2825, the Jewish Family Service Agency and the Jewish Federation. He is past president of the Association of Synagogue Administrators and a senior member of the Professional Association of Temple Administrators in the 11 Western states. Two years ago, he was appointed by the Pacific Southwest Region of the United Synagogue to Judge-chairman position, in charge of a tribunal adjudicating in New Mexico. fond farewell Herb Kaufman, right, president of KVVU TV, Channel 5, is general chairman of the testimonial dinner for Leo Wilner, left, executive director of Temple Beth Sholom, who is retiring after 18 years as the Temple? s chief executive. no words can ever express the wall Leo Wilner completes his pilgrimage to the holy Wailing Wall in Jeruselem during a 1969 visit. On numerious occasions, Wilner has served the Temple Beth Sholom congregation as substitute rabbi and has conducted sabbath and holiday services. He has even pinch-hit as cantor, when necessary. The Israelite newspaper chose him ? Man of the Year? a few years ago and the entire Wilner family was honored guest at the 1983 picnic of the Jewish Family Service Agency. Mickey Wilner, besides being the Temple? s first lady, is mother of their two sons, Robert in Laguna Hill and Martin, a PhD living in Las Vegas. A life member of Hadassah, she is active in the Temple?s Sisterhood, the Bnai Brith Women and the Judy Bayley Cancer Group. Mickey was a volunteer at Sunrise Hospital for many years and today is a member of that hospital?s Auxiliary. She also belongs to the Juvenile Diabetes Group. Wilner is a native of Brooklyn, New York, who plans to spend his retired life right here in Las Vegas.
