Henderson has never been so Jewish! In a brief two-week period, Green Valley Ranch became a Jewish neighborhood! The neighbors watched as first a flotilla of trucks, carts, vans, and people appeared at the Temple to disgorge chairs, tables, desks, books, prayer books, and everything else a synagogue needs. Volunteers came from all over; Jim Ratigan, former president of the UNLV Alumni Association and a candidate for the Board of Regents, was prominent among those who stopped by to pitch in. We worked and worked, packing and loading, unloading and moving, here and there. By lunch, the bulk of the moving was done. By mid-afternoon, everything was in the new building. Tuesday night, a group showed up to begin to redistribute the furniture and boxes. By the end of that evening, the Hebrew School classrooms were set up, awaiting only each teacher's individual touch. Thursday another group came by to do more. The following week, the end of the move took place - a group of volunteers moved the last of the furniture, another groups cleaned Cactus Garden, and still more helped get things in the right places at Paseo Verde. In between, the Torot came from Cactus Garden in a procession that stretched well down the street. A line of people marched up Valle Verde, over the railroad tracks, past Green spun Junior High, over 1-215 and made the turn onto Paseo Verde. At the new building, the anticipation was thick. People peered down the hill, looking for the first sign of the procession. Kids ran down to the street to look. Updates came every few minutes. Finally, someone shouted "They're coming, they're coming," and the long line filed into the social hall to see the Torot put into the Ark. Barry Fieldman, Mark Goldstein, and Jerry Welt said a few words and we introduced Rabbi Wiederhorn, who made a special trip for the occasion. By 2:00 pm, the new building was more than a structure; it was our Temple. Everyone in the nearby neighborhoods took note. Even the Real Estate section of the R-J featured a story about the Torah walk - with a photo! "Those real estate agents know how to sell a neighborhood," Cantor Bob always says. A few people wandered up during the move, asking when services would begin. An Ice Cream truck came by during the move; turns out the driver was Jewish. Now he's talking about joining Midbar! TOD AH RABAH! It was a big job and at times it was doubtful if we could do it on our own, without hiring outside help. We came together as a congregation, and community, and relocated Midbar Kodesh Temple in one morning. Thank you to everyone who lent us their time, trucks, and muscle. Thanks to those of you who came back to Cactus Garden later in the week to clean up for our final services, to those who returned to Paseo Verde a few nights later to rearrange and to everyone who closed up Cactus Garden on March 30th! Thank you all for making the move easy and successful! Shel Sbarra A MESSAGE FROM OUR CONGREGANTS We have done many different things at the Temple over the years - but today was something so special that I wanted to share my feelings with everyone. I am grateful that Mark and I were able to participate in this memorable event To share it with oar friends made it even more special. I think we should all be very proud of what we've accomplished by all of our hard work and love. Congratulations to all of us!! We started off celebrating birthday and anniversary Shabbat, and were treated to two spectacular Shabbat services lead by our 5th and then our 6th graders. Alayna Baron, Alex Glyman, Matthew Goldstein, Rena Golstein, Rachel Lipman, Jason Perlmutter and Robbie Seaver participated in the 5th grade Shabbat. Sixth graders Michael Fieldman, Nicole Goldberg, Alan Hoffman, Jamie Kaminsky, Phillip Maglowitz, Danielle Perlman, Zachary Premack, Daniella Silverstein, Greg Simon, Eric Stein and Michelle Stone led the congregation in prayer mid-month. These sixth graders make up the newest list of B'nei Mitzvah and are working with Cantor Bob Fisher to ready them to take their religious responsibility as young adults within our synagogue. Midbar looks forward to more student lead services as we meet together in our new building. Thanks to School Administator Mira Slobody and teachers Janet Weinstein and Marcia Bard who helped prepare the students to lead services. The punch line is always the same....it is the name of the person who wrote the check! We were trying to come up with a clever name for our temple and community members who make donations for specific needs or programs, but do not wish their specific gift to be disclosed or recognized. A person knows happy days, sad times, exciting moments, and ordinary days, but to be convinced that on a certain day at a specific time one has been touched on the shoulder is somewhat unusual. But so it was! That spiritual moment occurred for me as Midbar Kodesh's three Torot were being carried out of the building on Cactus Drive on Sunday morning to be-gin their journey either by car or by being walked to a new home. Where had these Torot once traveled? I was swept backward in time to the Sinai desert and Moses. He spoke to us not only to leam the laws that were being handed down but to live by the laws written, thus insuring us a life that would be meaningful and good. We listened! We taught our children! We carried these laws, now on parchment, to Jerusalem, Babylonia, Egypt, Persia, Syria, to Spain, to Eastern and Western Europe and to the new world. Our three Torot had traveled to all these places. Throughout the millennia we cared for these Torot. We knew happiness and sorrow as we continued to follow the teachings written therein and always to teach our children. However, not all peoples with whom we resided liked our ways of the Torot and thus we paid a heavy price through expulsion, execution, or exile. But nothing deterred us. And now more than 3000 years later, on March 26, 2000, we brought these Torot, after being in different places and in many eons of time, to a new home at 1940 Paseo Verde Parkway in Henderson, Nevada. We shall continue to live by the teachings that are written therein, to teach our children to read and follow the laws. We will pray as we have throughout the millennia to God to help us to continue in our traditions and to praise God and be thankful for the gift of our Torot. This moment was spiritual for me as our history was captured in our three Torot. I am so grateful that I was given the opportunity to walk with our Torot that had traveled the millennia, to a new and joyful home in the holy desert in Nevada. ACADEMY AWARDS PARTY AWARD WINNING! Terri Baskin, Judie Lewis and Lauralee Rothman joined Super Stars as the big winners when Midbar Kodesh Temple paid tribute to "A NIGHT AT THE MOVIES!" More than 90 people, tired and sunburned from the Torah Walk earlier in the day, enjoyed this Annual Academy Awards evening together at the home of Barry & Amy Fieldman. An elegant dinner was prepared and served by Madeline Morris, who wanted to be sure Midbar turned a profit so she donated her catering services for the evening. Other Thanks Yous go to Chairs Gail Alcalay, Amy Fieldman and Marcy Welt who were aided by Terri Baskin, Janet Stein, Isabel Goldberg, Allen Morris, Barry Fieldman and Jerry Welt Special Thanks goes to Madeline Morris Catering, Beyond Design and Parking Solutions; and for Silent Auction Items: Terri Baskin, Janie Baker, Fort Knox Diamonds & Fine Watches, Leo Kazandjian, Rina Roselinsky, Jerry & Marcy Welt, Gay Goldstein, Euphoria Spa, Warner Brother's Stage 16, Raley's and The Sports Club. Holocaust Studies To Be Taught To Midbar Teens "Studying The Lessons of The Holocaust Into The 21st Century" is the topic of the next mini-mester for the Ma'ayan Program at Midbar Kodesh Temple. Ma'ayan was designed for post B'nei Mitzvah students, 8th through 12th Grades. Roz Sbarra, who heads the Holocaust Studies Library at the Las Vegas Jewish Federation teaches the class that meets on Tuesday evenings. The class will focus on the historical overview of the Holocaust including the moral and ethical implications, said Mrs. Sbarra. The class will culminate with activities for the community Yom Hashoah Program that will be hosted at Midbar Kodesh Temple on May 2. Registration is ongoing and drop-ins are welcome. ft? -"- 1 Women's Social Club Mah Jongg Every Monday Night For More Information Call Jil Glyman 897-5697 KOL BAMIDBAR PAGE 6 April 2000 Midbar Kodesh Enjoys Noisy Purim 2000 On March 20, 2000 Midbar Kodesh members and guests enjoyed a noisy Purim service. The service was the last Purim at 33 Cactus Garden location in Henderson. Members celebrated in a room with bare walls. Just the day before, more than 100 people moved most of the Temple furnishings to the new building. This year's service featured the reading of the complete Megillah by Dr. Edward Goldman. Participants young and old shook their graggers over and over again. As the reading progressed the noise from the graggers rose and rose some more as everyone competed to drown out the name of Hainan. Participants in the service also read aloud the biblical verses within the Megillah that promise the redemption of the Jews in a hope that all Jews will be united in the land of Israel. It was fitting that Purim and its story of redemption close the wandering of our congregation. Our homes on Eastern and at Cactus Garden have served us well, but now we'll celebrate in the fruits of our labor, the built we built for ourselves and our children. Office Update by Maria Scher, Office Administrator During the month of April as we shop around for Kosher for Pesach foods (which are now so much easier to come by thanks to Vons, Raley's, and Albert sons) we are reminded of our ancestor's journey through the desert. Once released from bondage in Egypt, the Jewish people wandered for 40 years before entering into the land of Israel. How appropriate that we too shall end our wandering in the desert and find our home during this month as well (Baruch Hashem it didn't take us 40 years to find a place!). We are still settling in, but for the most part, everything has gone quite smoothly. A world of thanks to Shel Sbarra for arranging the physical move, and to Alan Roselinsky for orchestrating the Torah Walk. Since the Temple office seems always to be a bustling place of work, it is with great excitement that I welcome Charlene Naft, one of our USYer's, who will be working in the Temple office in the afternoons.
