The ?√ß divorce mill grinds^^idly. Headlines ar^ born ! quickly. Alert to this source, many Hollywood columnists ; dispatch leg-men to Nevada to run dpwn tips and 'interview personalities. Harrison Catrcfitt, for ex- | ample, just sent his representative (Bill Latham), to the Desert Inn for a few words with Jane Powell, I whose several year marriage to Geary Steffen seems [definitely headed for the divorce courts. Added to [ this is the fact ^J0t Gene Nelson, himself separated iJrom his wife, np been ?? visitor to the Inn while > Jane has been j||ftlling a four week date. Jol|?·. Lewis, perennial night club funster is a regularilMine El Rancho Vegas, just completing one stint there and already claimed for another shortly. This house recently offered Ab- : bott and Costello, who'll make a return appearance in the future. Jimmy Durante, Frank Sinatra, (Frankie I^aine are but three film luminaries plucked by the Desert Inn for in-person dates. This house will offer Betty Hutton for one month beginning July 7, and she'll nail $100,000 for the stint. It is said that many of these people who command up to $20,000 a week for multiple-week engagements losex their earnings at the gaming tables With one or two exceptions this" ain't true. Most of the hotels prefer that the acts don't chance fate with their take. It is important to the hotel owners that these acts be available for repeat engagements and they \ion't like having to pay train fare home for an act which has had bad luck at the indoor greenery. Most hotels have "priority" on certain names and repeat them year after year. For example, Liberace has made 13 appearances at the Last Frontier?╟÷why, we'll never know. y TEMPERAMENT sometimes shows thru talent. Ezio Pinza is said to have been a pain in the aria to the Sands management but this may be attributed to the fact that while his is a great voice it's hardly suitable for the intimacy of a supper club. Pinza, the great romance of??the Broadway stage was a nervous, old performer in the harsh white spotlight of the Copa Room. While "newsmen vie for exclusives in this town, so to a certain extent do the hotel operators try for them in nailing down big name acts. The operators being true and deep-dyed gamblers will buy almost any act that is available. They're the Zieg- felds of the desert. The producers of the largest hits in Broadway history were of the same breed, but their latter-day counterparts are in the main conservative business men. It is from these that 3^$F.'V?╤gas has taken the play. The gamblers seem to be the great showmen.of today. THE SPARK of showmanship has flamed high in Las Vegas and its basic showmanship without 3-D, glasses or trick effects?╟÷simple, direct and pleasing. It must be good, Howard Hughes is spending most of his lime here. Who knows but that someday the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences will have to come up here and drop an Oscar. The Spanish name for Las Vegas is translated as "Fruitful Plains" and evidently it's been so for the local know-how operators. Occasionally in picking acts these gamblers crap out, but for the most part the roll's in their favor. When you come up here, we can't guarantee how you'll do in the casinos, but you're a lead pipe cinch to collect-big in entertainment fare. ^ RTHE ORIGINAL _ omeikF PRESS CLIP^GS -?√ß" 220 W. 19th St., NE W YOtell,N.Y.
