    COLLEGE OF ARCHITECTURE^ CONSTRUCTION MANAGEMENT AND PLANNING
    of professional design education at UNLV began in the 1970s when local architects Julio Lucchesi, Robert FieldenSnd George Tate began explorations with tne University and the professional design community regarding the establishment of an architecture program. These exploratory studies led the University to contract Hugh Burgess, Dean of Arizona State University, to conduct a
    . feasibility studyrar an architecture program at LSlV. From this feasibility study, the first architecture classes during 1981 with local architects
    Tom Schoeman, George Tate and Ra®,ucchesi volunteering their time to teach courses. Ray Lucchesi assumed leadership of the program in 1982 developing a two-year experimental program and establishing funding fcWhe program. In 1985, year program leading to the Bachelor of Science in Architecture was approved by the University Board of Regents.
    In 1986, Hugh Burgess vW selected to head the Architecture Studies program and develop undergraduate degree programs in Landscape Architecture, Interior Design, Urban Planning and Construction Management. The Architecture Studies program was placed in the newly established College of Engineering in 1988 under the administration ofDr. William R. Wells.
    In 1989, the University Board of Regents approved a graduate professional degree program in architecture and in the 1990 fall semester, a two-year professional gradiHe study, leading degree, was added
    program. As of March, 1996, the program has granted two M. Arch, degrees and has twenty-nine enrolled graduate students in the graduate architectural program.
    In August 1994, the University Board of Regents separated the Architecture Studies program from the College of Engineering and recognized the College of Architecture, Construction Management and Planning as an autonomous academic unit containing the programs for Architecture, Landscape Architecture, Interior Design, Urban Planning and Construction Management, rajuly 1995, Dr. William Wells, again assumed leadership of the program as Interim Dean. During the fall semester 1995, the CWege had a total population of 305 enrolled design and construction management majors.
    During the 1995-1996 academic the College has gained regional and national I stature through its symposia and design charettes on Las Vegas Architecture and
    Sustainable Desert Development. A new building for the College is anticipated to begin construction during the summer of 1996 and the College, fortified with fresh new alumni, is looking forward to continued success and growth.
