Pat McCarran pledged unqualified support behind the Las Vegas Valley Water District program late yester­day at the Colorado River Commission meeting on the water plan in the Las Vegas Chamber of Commerce offices. The senator indicated he would submit any legislation necessary to provide more water for Las Vegas Valley from mighty Lake Mead. A lengthy conference on the water issue resolved itself into the appointment of a committee to prepare a feasible plan whereby the water district can: be assured as firm supply from Lake Mead. Gov. Charles Russell named Jack Beuhler, Frank Strong, and A. E. Cahlan, of the CRC, and resident Engineer A. J. Shaver and BMI plant manager, Julian Moore to meet with representa­tives of the Las Vegas Valley Water District. Campbell, president of the Water District board of directors, declared that the “ ur­gency for more water for Las Vegas is upon us. We must get the job done.” He added that “if anyone can accomplish the job, the Water District can.” . Senator McCarran, in pledging legislative support, dispelled re­ports that John Mueller, special representative of the Genera] Services Administration, is not disposed to transferring control of Henderson water to the dis­trict when he announced that the negotiators “would receive full cooperation from Mueller." Campbell reported that he be­lieved water rates to city con­sumers would have to be in­creased, and could conceivably double in order to finance the ex­pansion program. | Campbell’s program for the purchase of water from the CRC was based on the district’s pro­posal to buy 10,000,000 gallons of water daily from the Basic plant at Henderson, but there was some problem as to whether this amount of water could be spared. Plant lessees have asked the CRC not to make outside allocations j of water, until their plants are completed, so there will be am­ple protection for future expan­sion. Another point calls for a sound financing basis upon which long term bbnds of the district may be issued, possibly for a period of not less than 40 years, Camp­bell reDorted. I
