three or four years, we can build up— with Europe furnishing the largest part of the troops— a land force which will make the gamble of war unattractive for the Russians. MAKING THE COST TOO HIGH FOR THE RUSSIANS We do not have to match hordes of Russian troops with hordes of western troops. New anti-tank weapons have changed the balance to favor the defensive. Also, the atom bomb can be used tactically against the concentration of tanks and troops which is necessary to the Russian method of attack. As long as we have superiority in atomic weapons and can use them against armies, it will be a grim picture for the Russians. We can’t do all these things today. But we don’t have to do them today. It is a matter of* three to four years from now. J r . __________ (Continued from Inside Page) The Russians have never shown themselves willing to attack unless they thought they had something easy. In Korea, they had no idea that the United States would be in the fight. They have no wish now to fight against the United States. We are currently making ourselves strong. If we will follow military advice and not let politics enter the picture, we will have an excellent chance of avoiding a third world war. We will have an excellent chance of avoiding atomic attack on ourselves, on our children or on our grandchildren. We have a good chance of avoiding such attack. But we must be strong. And we must be awake without waiting for another Pearl Harbor to wake us up. We must, then, be strong and awake. At the present time, above everything else, this means supporting General Eisenhower.
