LAS VEGAS/4505 MARYLAND PARKWAY/LAS VEGAS, NEVADA 89154-2005/(702) 739-3177 May 1, 1991 Dear CSUN Senator: I would like to express my deepest concern on the issue of funding for the continuation of the services of an excellent health educator. I firmly believe that Ray Rodriguez plays a role on campus that needs not only to continue, but to be supported even more. I am a resident on campus who is highly involved with the campus community. I have attended several of the programs Ray Rodriguez has done for groups in the residence halls. I have seen first hand how he can interact with the students in a way that earns respect and attention. The students respond to him by the gain of valuable knowledge and by discussion of many important topics. The university is here to educate. I feel it is the responsibility of UNLV not only to offer classes but to provide sources to which students can turn to for important facts and information. No one can deny that the issues addressed in health education pertain to our campus. The use of drugs and alcohol, the spread of STD's and the HIV virus, eating disorders and poor personal care habits are all realities here. Many say that the best solution to curbing the problems we have now is the better education of our youth. Why does the policy of those holding the money always seem to reflect otherwise? I urge you to strongly question any decisions you may make against the furthering of education on health issues. Personal health and well-being is a prerequisite to leading a successful and productive life. That's something we'd all like to have. Thank you for your time. Sincerely, Cheryl L. Sawyer STUDENT SERVICES STUDENT DEVELOPMENT CENTER April 17, 1991 Consolidated Students (CSUN) CSUN Senators/MSU 12 0 University of Nevada, Las Vegas Dear Senators: Please accept this as my official recommendation for Mr. Raymond Rodriguez and the continuation of funding for his position as Health Educator in the Student Health Service Center. From what I have been told, and observed, Mr. Rodriguez has served this position as an outstanding and dedicated employee. Mr. Rodriguez has compiled a most impressive record this past year in his ability to work cooperatively with faculty, staff and students in the field of health education. He is extremely competent in his knowledge of health education, and it is not uncommon for the University and local community organizations to request his expertise. He often serves on many campus committees dealing primarily with student organizations. Currently, Mr. Rodriguez is seriously considering pursuing his Masters at UNLV in clinical psychology. I see this as an automatic step to greater achievements for this very talented man. His overall competency and human relations skills along with his dedication towards success uniquely qualifies him, and this position, for financial assistance. There is no doubt in my mind that, if funding is continued, he would continue to serve the University exceedingly well. Sincerely, James R. Kitcnen, Ed.D., Director Student Development Center JRK:gw UNIVERSITY OF NEVADA. Your perspective on overall wellness was helpful to the students as well as myself. It is important for the students to understand this concept and also a good way for them to become exposed to the health center and its services. / I look forward to working on future projects with you. Sincerely, Becky VijAaescusa Student Leadership Development Committee cc: Lori Winchell I STUDENT §> J UNION SCHOOL OF HEALTH, PHYSICAL EDUCATION, AND RECREATION April 26, 1991 TO: CSUN Senators FROM: Dr. Warren HcNab Professor & Coordinator of Health Education RE: Student Health Center Health Educator This letter is to recommend continued funding of the Health Educator position for The Student Health Center of UNLV. The key to prevention of many health problems for students at UNLV is prevention through education. Providing students with the knowledge and skills needed to practice preventive lifestyle behaviors can enhance their health and reduce the probability of severe health problems. This position provides for the planning and implementation of a comprehensive health education program for UNLV students. Mr Ray Rodriquez, Health Educator for the UNLV Student Health Center has initiated and conducted needed health programs for the students at UNLV. These include educational programs on peer education, sexuality education, HIV, rape prevention, multicultural diversity, radio spotlights, sexual exploitation, immunizations, and the annual health fair. Health Education programs are only a3 viable as one's ability to reach the target audience with information and materials they will use to enhance their lifestyles. • There is a definite need for The Student Health Center Health Educator position. I would strongly recommend continued funding for this position. The students of UNLV will be the benefactors of these efforts in preventing student health problems. I know that the presentation will be etched in their minds for quite some time because of their discussions long after you left them. You have opened their eyes to things that might not have been spoken about for some time in their young 1ives. You have made quite an impression on the active mem-bers as well and I'm sure you will be asked to speak very soon . My recommendation to Jay Dee Leonard will be to make your Health Awareness presentation a mandatory function for all pledge classes and active houses for both fraternities and sororities. I just hope you can handle all of the new business . On a more personal note, I would like to extend a standing and open invitation to you. The brothers of the Eta Epsilon chapter of the Alpha Tau Omega fraternity are some of the warmest and friendliest you will ever know. I know that they will welcome you with open arms. I have been miles away from home and felt the need to share some quality time with people I care about as well. Please look no further Remember Ray, you are a brother for life, and we are your family. Fratern^lly, Alpha Tau Omega # 732-9423 Joel S. Ray Rodriguez has certainly committed himself to a myriad of health education causes for our campus. I am impressed with the level of sincerity and knowledge from which he works with and for students. I believe Student Government can feel more than satisfied in the magnitude of programming and student assistance received during this past year. In short, student monies were well spent. Until the legislation session has fully addressed the financial status for UNLV, the role of health education is tenuous. However, we do know that Ray Rodriguez is a professional health educator who has accomplished much and who is motivated to accomplish more for our campus. I hope that Student Government can enable Mr. Rodriguez to continue his fine work through their continued financial support.
