Furthman, Jules

American screenwriter, magazine author, and newspaper author was born on March 5, 1883 in Chicago, Illinois to Sarah I. Ford and Edmund Furthman. Furthman attended Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois. He began his career as a magazine writer in. He began submitting screenplays and stories for silent films in 1915, and wrote for Hollywood, California in 1918, and wrote into the 1950s. He is most known for his screenplays for Only Angels Have Wings (1939), To Have and Have Not (1944), Rio Bravo(1959). Additionally, he assisted on Howard Hughes'The Outlaw (1943). During World War I, Furthman wrote under the pen name Stephen Fox in order to avoid any association with his perceived German heritage.

Furthman married Sybil Travila on June 9, 1920 in Los Angeles, California. They had one son, Jules Furthman Jr. born on March 20, 1921. Furthman died on September 25, 1966 in Los Angeles.
