Charles Starrett was born in Athol, Massachusetts to a prosperous family; he received a private education and enrolled in Dartmouth University before choosing an acting career. After studying at the New York Academy of Dramatic Arts, Starrett began appearing in vaudeville and stock theatre before signing a contract with Paramount Pictures in Hollywood, California. Soon after completing his first screen role, he helped form the Screen Actors Guild (SAG). For several years he was cast as a typical 'leading man' in romantic comedies and dramas; this included his role in Howard Hughes' The Age for Love. After his contract with Paramount, Starrett signed with Columbia Pictures and began a sixteen-year career making Westerns; his most famous role was sixty-four appearences as the Durango Kid. Starrett retired in 1952 and died in Borrego Springs, California in 1986.
