Engel, Joseph W., 1883-1943

Description

Joseph Engel was born in New York City, New York in 1883. By 1911, he was involved with the Rex Company, that produced films for Universal Studios. In 1912, he joined the newly formed Famous Players with Adolph Zukor. He moved to the Metro Pictures Corporation, the fore-runner of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM) in 1915, where he produced their first film The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse. Mayer worked as a producer through the 1920s, including involvement with the Caddo Company that culminated with his role as production manager for Hell's Angels between 1927 and 1930. Engel divided his time between New York City and Los Angeles, California throughout his working career and died in New York in 1943.
