Thomas Mitchell was an actor, playwright and screenwriter active between the 1920s and 1960s. Born on July 11, 1892 in Elizabeth, New Jersey, he worked as a newspaper reporter after graduating high school, but eventually shifted to writing for theater. Mitchell performed on Broadway and continued writing throughout the 1920s, and began a prominent acting career in Hollywood in the 1930s. His known roles include Gerald O'Hara in Gone with the Wind (1939), Uncle Billy in It's a Wonderful Life (1946), and Pat Garrett in the Howard Hughes-produced and directed The Outlaw (1943).

Mitchell died on December 17, 1962 in Beverly Hills, California.
