Stone, George E., 1903-1967

Notable character actor throughout the early 1900s, George E. Stone was born in Lodz, Poland on May 18, 1900 as Gershon Lichtenstein. Stone spent his early childhood working in a silk factory to support his struggling family. His family escaped Poland in the early 1900s, smuggling into Germany to escape religious persecution for their Jewish ancestry. The Stone family arrived in New York, New York in 1912, but Stone's mother died on the journey. Growing up with his father and step-mother, Stone eventually ran away from home at the age of fourteen selling newspapers.

William Farnum took an interest in Stone, and assisted him in landing his debut role in The End of Trail (1916). After several years of working on stage and in vaudeville, Stone broke his leg and was encouraged to give film a chance. He debutted in film in 7th Heaven (1927) as a sewer rat. Stone's illustrious career spanned four decades and 189 films and television shows. He also starred in Howard Hughes' The Front Page (1931).

Stone married twice. First, to Ida Pleet on March 25, 1937, but the two divorced soon after. He remarried on March 4, 1945 to Marjorie Ramey, but the two also divorced shortly after the ceremony. He spent his later years residing in the Motion Picture Country Home, after he suffered a stroke in 1966. Stone died in Woodland Hills in Los Angeles, California on May 26, 1967.
