Andre, Dorothy Engel, 1898-1983

Dorothy Engel Andre was born June 25, 1898 in New York City, New York to Samuel and Merel Engel. She studied at an all-girls school in Virginia before moving to Astoria, Oregon with her sister. In 1920, she met Joseph (Joe) Otto Andre at a hospital and soon after the couple got married and had one daughter named Ruth.

Joe Andre was offered a contract to work in Tonopah, Nevada and the family moved there in 1922. Dorothy had a hard time adjusting to life in Tonopah and subsequently moved to Oakland, California. After some time, Dorothy decided to come back to Tonopah to be closer with her husband. While in Tonopah, they ran a bootlegging joint called the Canary Cottage.

The couple moved to cities like Ely and Elko, Nevada and Sacramento, California, where Joe Andre worked as a musician. Dorothy participated in organizations like the Red Cross and Eastern Star. Eventually, the couple settled down in Beatty, Nevada where where they ran their own restaurant. Dorothy Engel Andre died in 1983 and Joe Andre died in 1982.
