Duarte, Denise, 1960-

Description

Denise Duarte was born in 1960 and is an activist and artist in Nevada. She led the Nevada Women's Lobby and Stand OUT for Equality, both important advocacy groups for women's and LGBTQ+ rights in Nevada.

Denise recieved her Master of Fine Arts in Community Arts from the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA). Her public art has also won awards in Las Vegas, Nevada. Duarte received the Las Vegas Mayor's Urban Design Award for Public Art in 2008, and then again in 2011. She is also the founder of the Nevada LGBTQ Leadership Coalition, which she began in 2009. That same year, she worked with the Nevada Legislature to establish Equality Days, the first LGBTQ+ celebration day in Nevada.

Denise is a prolific author as well as activist, publishing articles primarily gender, LGBTQ+, feminism, and art, and continues to write and work for social equality.
