Fred A. Monson was born in 1880 in Wisconsin. He and his wife Clara moved to Las Vegas, Nevada in 1922 due to their car breaking down on the edge of the city. He first owned a machine shop, then acquired lead and silver mines and branched out into construction. He was the owner of Monson Sand and Gravel Plants as well as some stone quarries both in Nevada and in California. Fred Monson may be best known for his house, dubbed the "Rock House", as it was constructed almost entirely from white quartz and travertine. He built it himself in 1946 and 1947, having mined the slabs from his own mines. Fred A. Monson died in 1959.
