LaVoie, Joseph, 1916-1995

Joseph Theodor LaVoie was a police officer and civic activist in Las Vegas, Nevada. He was born in St. Boniface, Canada on March 28, 1916. Around 1920, the family moved to Los Angeles, California. In 1939, LaVoie moved to Las Vegas, Nevada, and began work at the Rheem Manufacturing Company in Henderson. In 1946, LaVoie joined the City of Las Vegas Police Department as a motorcycle officer where he worked as a police officer for twenty years, retiring as a sergeant in 1966. From 1967 to 1971, LaVoie worked as chief of security for the Bonanza Hotel and Casino. LaVoie ran unsuccessfully for public office for the positions of Clark County Sheriff, Clark County Commissioner of Unincorporated Areas, and for Nevada's State Senate District Three. LaVoie was involved in many civic and labor organizations including serving as president of Friends of Youth, president of the Police Protective Association in 1962, president of the Clark County Democratic Party in 1968, and as the business manager for Teamsters Local 14. Joseph T. LaVoie passed away on February 24, 1995 in Las Vegas, Nevada.
