Howard William Zellhoefer was born on July 23, 1906 in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. He served as a United States Army Reserve Medical Officer during World War II and the Korean War. He retired from the military in 1952 and opened a private surgery practice in Carmel, California. Zellhoefer later moved to Las Vegas, Nevada and practiced medicine in Las Vegas and Boulder City, Nevada until 1971. He then worked as a ship surgeon on the Epirotiki Cruise Lines, sailing around the world for many years. Zellhoefer also bought an old railroad tie house in Tecopa, California in 1969, where he later retired to. He died April 19, 1997.
