Boulder City, Nevada community leader Peggy Hyde Phillips (1916-1997) was born Helen Thelma Lewis in Iowa in 1916. Her father gave her the nickname of Peggy as a child and she used the name for the rest of her life. She married Charles Hyde (1907-1956) in 1937. He served in the United States Army Air Corps and worked as a flight instructor at Condor Field in Twentynine Palms, California during World War II. After the war, the family relocated to Boulder City, Nevada. They opened Desert Trails, a sporting goods and toy store in 1946. Peggy Hyde Phillips belonged to numerous organizations in Boulder City including the Boulder City Women’s Club, the Nevada Federation of Women’s Clubs, and the Boulder City Parent Teacher Association. In the 1950s, she was elected to the Boulder City School Board and later served on the Clark County Board of School Trustees. After Charles Hyde’s death in 1956, she sold their business in Boulder City. Her son, Michael Hyde (1938-1966), graduated from Boulder City High School in 1956 where he was well-known for his athletic abilities. He attended the United States Air Force Academy and was the first graduate of the Academy from the state of Nevada. Following graduation, Michael Hyde joined the United States Air Force. His plane was shot down in Vietnam in 1966 and he was declared dead, but his remains were not returned to the United States until 1991. Peggy Hyde Phillips married Ed Phillips in 1961. They moved from Boulder City to Las Vegas in 1964, and she served on the Winchester Town Advisory Board. Peggy Hyde Phillips passed away in 1997.
