Wendy Starkweather was born July 1, 1949 and was raised in rural Ogdensburg, New York. She attended Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs, New York and became a teacher and librarian in New Hampshire. She married her husband, Peter, on August 26, 1972 in Schenectady, New York and the couple moved to Las Vegas, Nevada in 1978.
Getting a job at the University of Nevada Las Vegas’ (UNLV) library took some time, but finally in 1985, Starkweather was offered the position of head of references. During her career at UNLV she worked under the leadership of six deans. She had a voice in the development of library services, impacting circulation, interlibrary loans, and non-book services that included media and instruction. Starkweather was an active member of the library staff until her retirement in 2010.
