Goynes, Theron

Description

Theron Goynes was born August 20, 1929 in Texarkana, Texas. He attended college at Texas A & M University, was in the Army Reserve Officers' Training Corps (ROTC), served in the United States Air Force, and then became an educator. Goynes met his future wife, Naomi Jackson, in Nashville, Arkansas where they were both young teachers in 1956.

By 1958, they were married, living in Los Angeles, California and soon accepted positions with the Department of Interior Bureau of Indian Affairs to teach the Navajo Reservation in Arizona. The Goynes both signed teaching contracts in 1964 with Clark County School District and moved to Las Vegas with their young children. They have resided in North Las Vegas ever since on Veronica Street, aka "Teachers Row." As of 2012, Goynes was a retired elementary school principal and also a former North Las Vegas City Councilman and Mayor Pro Tempore. Goys was the first black man in Nevada history to chair a government body.
