Lawrence Lyman Hezzelwood was born on October 16, 1898 in Iowa Falls, Iowa. Before 1912, his family moved to Des Moines, Iowa. After completing high school and some college, he went to work for the National Life Association of Des Moines. It was there that he met his first wife, Marie Baker. They married in 1923 and had a son, Loren. Marie died in child birth. Larry left his son with his wife's family and moved to Nevada with his older brother George Hezzelwood. He remarried in the 1930s to Nell Rowe. During World War II, Larry joined the United States Seabees. He was deployed to the Mediterrean theatre and came come in 1944 to Reno, Nevada. When he returned to Nevada, he got involved in Nevada's gaming industry. Larry eventually took ownership of The Boulder Club and the Las Vegas Club, cementing his role in gaming. He died in 1962.
