Louis John Vitale was born on June 1, 1932, in San Gabriel, California. In 1954, Vitale earned his bachelor of business administration degree from the University of Los Angeles (UCLA). He attended an old mission theological seminary in 1964. Vitale obtained a doctor of philosophy degree in sociology from the University of Los Angeles in 1974.

Vitale was an intercept officer for the United States Air Force from 1964 to 1967. After his time in the Air Force, Vitale worked as a seminary and ministry with Franciscan Friars. Vitale was a board member and staff at the Nevada Test Site. He is a catholic priest assigned to "peace and justice ministries."
