The Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe is a Native American nation located in Mt. Pleasant, Michigan. The Saginaw Chippewa lived in the eastern region of Michigan and consist of three bands of Ojibwe (Black River, Swan Creek, and Saginaw). Treaties in 1855 and 1864 claimed most of their traditional lands, created the Isabella Indian Reservation of 130,000 acres, and then individually allotment the lands back to community members. By 1934 a small number of the original 1,500 allotments were owned by Chippewa due to the collaboration of Indian Agents, state government officials, and private lumber companies. In the twentieth century the Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe acquired 500 acres within the Mt. Pleasant region, and began to reorganize their community. Currently, the Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe has an enrolled population of approximately 2,700 members. They also operate the Saginaw Chippewa Tribal College, the Ziibiwing Center of Anishinabe Culture and Lifeways, the Soaring Eagle Casino, and the Saganing Eagles Landing Casino.
