Mohegan Tribe of Indians of Connecticut

The Mohegan Tribe is a Native American nation living in Uncasville, Connecticut. Historically the Mohegans lived along Lake Champlain in New York state. As a result of the so-called “Pequot War,” a division in community led Sachem Uncas to separate from the New York group, side with the British, and move to what is now Connecticut. The Mohegan spoke an Algonquian dialect which helped them to incorporate their settlements alongside other Algonquian speaking neighbors. Though conflicts and land dispossessions reduced Mohegan property and facilitated their unrecognized status throughout much of the twentieth century, the Mohegans continually petitioned and sued for federal recognition. In 1994, after providing numerous documentation of the long habitation of their lands, the Mohegans became federally recognized, and their land-base secured in trust. Currently, the Mohegans have approximately 1,500 tribally enrolled members. Their main economic enterprise is their Mohegan Sun, which is a casino and resort.
