Nimíipuu

The Nimíipuu, or Nez Perce Tribe, is a Native American nation with a reservation located in north-central Idaho. Traditionally the Nimíipuu traveled seasonally across what is now Oregon, Washington, Idaho, western Montana, and Wyoming. A treaty signed with the U.S. government in 1855 created the original Nez Perce Reservation. A subsequent 1863 treaty reduced the size of the reservation and led to the Nez Perce War of 1877. In recent years the Nimíipuu worked to preserve fishing and water rights in the Columbia River Basin and participated in a number of environmental protection projects. As of 2004, the Nimíipuu have over 3,300 enrolled members living both on and off the reservation.
