Starts with a KVBC Channel 3 opening followed by "A Chorus Line" advertisement, and gold watch advertisement. Next segment starts with a packaged opening for KVBC Channel 3, a news story on the proposed national gas tax, a story on the secret Area 10 military base near Tonopah, Nevada, a woman who was hit by a street light, followed by more commercials by Nevada Savings, the Holiday Casino's gaming, entertainment, and buffet offers. The next segment starts with an economic study story. Anchor Gwen Castaldi introduces a story on Vegas World, Stupak and the new show "Outrageous Vegas," which was performed in a room used during the day as the casino's race and sports book. The commercial set following includes pieces on the Inperial Palace Auto Show, a spot for the Associated Podiatry Group, and a Chevron credit card commercial. The sports segment features stories on football coach John Robinson leaving USC, boxing in Las Vegas, the UNLV Running Rebels featuring Sidney Green, the NFL, Steve Garvey, a construction update on Cashman Field, skiing report, and a fishing report. Commercials in the next segment feature ads by the Las Vegas Sun, Stanwell Mortgage, and Fairway Chevrolet. The weather segment is followed by commercials by Royal Transmission, and the Las Vegas Hilton presents the Moulin Rouge du Paris production show. The show continues with a travel segment featuring b-roll from McCarran International Airport before ending. The tape continues with more news segments and a replay of the earlier show including the Stupak interview. Different segments and commercials include, Follies Bregere at the Tropicana, Gordon's Jewlers, Mineral Bank, news segments, American Denture Service, the announcement of the "Las Vegas Stars" as the new name for the AAA baseball team, NBA coverage, Las Vegas Dodge, Vons, Tom Jones at Caesars Palace, Nevada State Bank, and La Mesa RV. The tape continues with News 13 newscast. Stories include the shooting of Metro officer James McClarren and the preliminary hearing of his alleged shooter, 15-year-old Hector Vento, various other court cases, a story on rent increases at Bonanza Village, coverage of COMDEX Computer Convention, a story in the Gaurdian Angles security group pulling back services on the Las Vegas Strip, and a story on a cheating ring centered around Vegas World. The segment discusses Vegas World cooperation, security upgrades including cameras and video recorders, Metro's anti-cheating detail headed by Sgt. Dennis Caputo, and various cheating scams. The sports segment features a story on the UNLV Rebels football team and sophomore quarterback Randall Cunningham. Pat Moreo oral history interview

Description

Pat Moreo was born in the borough of Queens in New York City. His family moved to the Finger Lakes region when he was ten and he finished grade school and high school in Horseheads. He grew up in a close Italian family watching his mother and his grandparents cook both southern and northern Italian dishes. Pat shares his family history, explaining how his maternal grandfather was originally a tunnel builder but quit that trade to open a luncheonette in New York, own and run apartment buildings, and become the first Pepsi Cola distributor in Queens Other family members ran the Pepsi franchise after his grandfather died. Mr. Moreo graduated from New York City Tech in 1967. He worked that summer at various hotels and restaurants and then decided to get his bachelor's degree in hotel and culinary work. He and several friends applied to Oklahoma State and were accepted, but were convinced at the last moment to apply at UNLV. They were accepted as students by Jerry Vallen, the new chair, and arrived in Las Vegas on Labor Day weekend. Coming from New York to Las Vegas in September of 1967 was like landing on Mars Pat describes in detail the heat, the small campus, and the supportive staff at UNLV. People like Jerry Vallen, Boyce Phillips, George Bussel, and Bruce Balton made the newcomers feel welcome, inviting them into their homes and making sure they were comfortable. Pat lived in Tonopah Hall and found work in the student union while working on his degree. After graduation in 1969, Pat went on to work for Harris Kerr Forster and Company (now PKF Consulting) and traveled for them all around California. After a stint in the Naval Reserves, he worked for Howard Johnson Company in NYC, and at the same time completed his master's degree at Cornell University. In 1975 he returned to UNLV as an instructor, earned a PhD in Ed Administration under George Kavina and went on to work at Penn State and New Mexico State. Pat returned to UNLV in 2006 to head the hotel/culinary department and is working with faculty and staff to make revitalizing changes. He expresses his opinions about the importance of food in every culture, explains his position on making people feel welcome, and shares his thoughts on what the future holds for Harrah's College of Hotel Administration.

They also describe their early occupations, religion, gambling, the Mormon Fort, and the effects of the Great Depression. The interview concludes with a brief discussion on the development of the Las Vegas Strip and recreational activities.

Pittman Family Photographs

Abstract

The Pittman Family Photographs depict members of the Pittman and Brewington families in Nevada from 1922 to 1989. The photographs primarily depict Nevada Governor Vail Pittman and his wife Ida Louise “Liz” Brewington Pittman at political campaign and fundraising events, including the Helldorado Parade in Las Vegas, Nevada and at the Governor’s Mansion in Carson City, Nevada. The photographs also depict Governor Pittman with President Harry S. Truman, Jim Cashman, and family members. The photographs also include a group photograph of U.S. Senator Key Pittman with business executives representing the Union Pacific Railroad and the San Pedro Railroad. Lastly, the collection also contains family photographs of Ann Brewington, Ida Brewington Pittman's sister.

The Robert H. Crabtree papers (1920-1999) sub-series contains an extensive account of Crabtree's career as a professor and archaeologist. Materials includes correspondence, photographic prints and negatives, reports, and notes of archeological surveys and excavations done in Southern California, Southern Nevada, Washington, Oregon, and Mexico. Collection includes resources such as field catalogs, proposals, newsletters, annual reports, workflow documentation, conference materials, and meeting minutes from various archaeological and anthropological societies and organizations. The subseries also includes class notes, dissertation drafts, and manuscripts used by Crabtree during his academic career. Digital files include field notes and reports.
