Abstract

The Betty Henderson Professional Papers (1963-1985) are comprised of materials produced by Betty Henderson in her capacity as a private music teacher in Las Vegas, Nevada and as a member of the Nevada Music Teachers Association (NMTA). The collection includes scrapbooks of concert programs and NMTA events, materials from Henderson's experiences in Europe as a People-to-People ambassador with the Music Teachers National Association, and recordings on reel-to-reel tapes of concerts Henderson performed in or judged.

Abstract

Oral history interview with Harvey Munford conducted by Claytee D. White on August 21, 2015 for the African Americans in Las Vegas: a Collaborative Oral History Project. Munford begins by discussing his career as a Nevada State Assemblyman and the Nevada legislative process. He then describes his early history, detailing his college education and athletic career as a basketball player for the University of Akron and later at Montana State University Billings. Munford also describes the discrimination he faced as an African American throughout his life particularly during the 1960s and 1970s, arriving in Las Vegas, Nevada in 1966, and his thirty-eight year career as a teacher in the Clark County School District.

Joe Ariki oral history interview

Abstract

Oral history interview with Joe Ariki conducted by Tony Gebbia on March 23, 2001 for the Public School Principalship Oral History Project. In this interview, Ariki reflects upon his 30-year career as an elementary school teacher and administrator in Denver, Colorado from the 1950s to the 1980s. He describes the process by which he became a teacher and eventually an administrator, and describes his regular job duties and challenges that he faced. He also discusses the introduction of computers into the classroom, and technology’s impact on education. He also offers suggestions for individuals interested in pursuing school administration, and describes what he believes are the qualities of a successful school leader.

Oral history interview with Steven D. McCoy conducted by Hope Vigil-Delgado on November 26, 2001 for the Public School Principalship Oral History Project. In this interview, McCoy reflects upon his 33-year career as a teacher and administrator with Nevada’s Clark County School District. He describes the process by which he became a teacher, and discusses how his teaching experience shaped his approach to school administration. He discusses his experience at Roy Martin Middle School, and describes the student cultural diversity and bilingual education programs within the school. He also discusses various programs that he implemented at various schools, and describes his approach to teacher evaluations and dismissals.

In this interview, Eshelman reflects upon her nearly 30-year career as a junior high school music teacher and administrator with the Clark County School District (CCSD) from the 1970s to the early 2000s. She discusses her early experiences as a music teacher and band director, and describes the challenges of transitioning from a teacher to a dean, and eventually principal. She also discusses her experience as a principal working at Gilbert Magnet School, and the different expectations that principals face when working with magnet programs.

In this interview, Moore reflects upon his more than 30-year career as a teacher and administrator in both Nebraska and Nevada. He discusses the process by which he went from being a teacher to a principal in Nebraska, and eventually became a principal in Nevada’s Clark County School District (CCSD). He discusses his experience as principal of J. T. McWilliams Elementary School, challenges that he faced as an administrator, and his involvement with the Parent Teacher Association. He also offers suggestions for individuals interested in pursuing school administration, and comments on having a school named after him.
