Norman "Ty" Hilbrecht oral history interview

Abstract

Oral history interview with Norman Ty Hilbrecht conducted by Claytee D. White on August 29, 2000 for the Boyer Early Las Vegas Oral History Project. Hilbrecht begins by describing his upbringing in Las Vegas, Nevada during the 1940s, popular locations in the city such as the Huntridge Theater, and his service in the United States Army. Hilbrecht explains how he became a lawyer with an independent practice after returning to Las Vegas from the Army in the 1950s. He also expands upon how he became a state assemblyman and state senator and describing his experiences during his political career. Throughout the interview, Hilbrecht expands upon different aspects of life in Las Vegas, including local events such as the Helldorado parade, the transition to corporate controlled casinos from private ownership, and race relations in the city.

Abstract

Oral history interviews with William Laub Sr. conducted by Claytee D. White on October 20 and 28, 2004 for the Boyer Early Las Vegas Oral History Project. Laub opens the interview discussing his service in the United States Navy in the Pacific Theater in World War II. He also talks about his education in Van Nuys, California, his time in law school, and gaining Basic Magnesium Inc. as a client for his California law firm. He discusses coordinating the construction of the gas pipeline from Henderson, Nevada into Las Vegas, Nevada. He recalls being injured in a gas explosion, that forced him to rehabilitate in Las Vegas, and inevitably move his family to the area in 1956. He describes the construction changes that occurred on the Las Vegas Strip from the 1950s onward. Laub also explains why the Thunderbird Hotel and Casino was a political epicenter, and recounts meeting Nevada Lieutenant Governor Clifford Jones and other political candidates.

Abstract

Oral history interviews with David Parks conducted by Dennis McBride on February 16 and 21, 2000 for the Las Vegas Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender Archives Oral History Project. In the interviews, Parks talks about his early life in Boston, Massachusetts, his education, and his service with the United States Air Force, where he was stationed at Nellis Air Force Base in Las Vegas, Nevada in 1967. Parks then recalls understanding his sexuality during his military service and policies regarding gay military personnel. He remembers coming out as gay in 1972, when he attended the University of Nevada, Las Vegas and worked for the City of Las Vegas as a computer operator. He then talks about getting involved with politics, his involvement with gay support organizations including Aid for AIDS of Nevada, and his experiences running as the first openly gay Nevada State Assemblyman in 1996. Lastly, Parks discusses same sex rights legislation that was brought forward during his time in office.

Scope and Contents

This series is comprised of Mark Fine's awards, event programs, correspondence, and other personal papers and ephemera from 1920 to 2014. Certificates and event programs from 2001 to 2014 document awards and honors bestowed upon Fine in recognition of his accomplishments in real estate development in Southern Nevada and his commitment to the Las Vegas community, especially the Clark County School District. The 2007 application and supporting documents for the naming of the Mark L. Fine Elementary School include a comprehensive biography of Fine, letters of support, and references. A 2012 picture book about Mark Fine, entitled A Hero Named Mark, is also included in the series. There is one folder of correspondence from 1982 to 1989 consisting of some letters and holiday cards, mainly from politicians thanking him for his support. Other ephemera from 1964 to 1990 includes: two programs from Fine’s high school graduation, a 1967 Zeta Beta Tau fraternity booklet featuring a picture of Mark Fine in college, his 1976 realtor license, a color image of a "Mark Fine for Mayor" bumper sticker, two of his business cards, and undated photographs of his home. Genealogical information about the Zolloto family from 1873 to 2011 is documented by a family tree, copies of marriage certificates, and an electronic copy of family minutes.

Gragson's professional and personal papers, and include correspondence, files concerning Gragson's tenure as Mayor of Las Vegas, Nevada, arbitration documents from disputes between labor unions and Las Vegas casinos, committee notes, financial plans, and documents from Clark County and Las Vegas government departments. The collection also contains city development plans, environmental reports, political party documents, memorabilia, ephemera, photographs, awards, newspaper clippings, and scrapbooks.
