Abstract

The collection is comprised of Dorothy and Clark "Danny" Lee's personal ephemera relating to their childhoods and high school experiences in Las Vegas, Nevada during the 1940s and 1950s. The materials focus mainly on Dorothy Damrow Lee's involvement with the Rhythmettes, a Las Vegas High School club. The collection highlights children's and young adults' experiences growing up in early Las Vegas as well as information on Las Vegas High School activities.

Abstract

The Soroptimist International of Greater Las Vegas and Paradise Valley Records document the activity of two Las Vegas, Nevada chapters of the women's advocacy group Soroptimist International from 1968 to 2000. The records contain membership information, by-laws, correspondence, scrapbooks, publications, memoranda, and ephemera about women's issues, environmental concerns, and the club's activities in the Greater Las Vegas and Paradise Valley chapters. The records also contain information from conferences held by Soroptimist International, including audio cassette recordings of speeches and presentations.

Abstract

The Marc Weiswasser Papers are comprised of materials from approximately 1976 to 2002 documenting Marc Weiswasser's career in the Las Vegas, Nevada gaming industry. The collection includes instructional guides and handbooks for table game dealers, employee handbooks and newsletters from the Flamingo Hilton and MGM Grand Las Vegas materials, as well as interviews and articles about Marc Weiswasser. The collection also includes newspaper clippings about the gaming industry and video recordings from the Institute for the Study of Gambling and Commercial Gaming. There are also reports from the Nevada Gaming Control Board regarding Regulation 6A, which deals with cash transactions prohibitions, reporting, and record keeping. The collection also includes a variety materials about the Casino Managamenet Association (CMA) including a promotional video, conference fliers, invitations, photographs from various CMA events, and educational materials related to casino operations.

Abstract

Oral history interviews with Brian Greenspun conducted by Barbara Tabach on January 10, 2018, January 24, 2018, February 21, 2018, and March 20, 2018 for the Southern Nevada Jewish Heritage Project. In the first interview, Greenspun discusses his parents, Hank and Barbara Greenspun, his family's ancestry, and how his family came to Las Vegas, Nevada. He recalls his childhood in Las Vegas, graduating from Las Vegas High School in 1964, and his decision to attend Georgetown University. In the second interview, Greenspun discusses the Watergate scandal, what he believes will fuel the next decade of Las Vegas growth, and development in the technology industry. He talks about the Greenspun Media Group, challenges in journalism, use of the term “fake news”, and the importance of giving young people a forum to talk about what they value. In the third interview, Greenspun recalls union demonstrations the Sands Hotel and Casino, the impact of American businessman Sheldon Adelson, and the need for balance in journalism. In the final interview, Greenspun talks about his father’s reporting on the Nevada Test Site, underground testing in the 1960s, and the early development of the Strip. Lastly, Greenspun talks about the importance of the University of Nevada, Las Vegas to the city’s future.
